Monmouth, Ore. - Western Oregon quarterback Mark Thorson threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns, running back Eliot Vinzant ran 30 times for 165 yard and two touchdowns and tight end Kevin Boss caught seven passes for 139 yards and two scores as Western Oregon won its sixth consecutive game with a 36-10 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville at McArthur Field.
The Javelinas had a season-high 304 yards in total offense, but were whistled for 122 yards in penalties and threw three interceptions.
"We moved it until we shot ourselves in foot with bad plays and penalties," said Javelina head coach Richard Cundiff. "You can't do that. Western Oregon came out here fired up and wanted to play well and did. For the most part they outplayed us."
True freshman quarterback Jeremy Heatley completed 22 of 37 passes for a career-high 230 yards and a touchdown, but also threw his first interceptions of his college career.
Junior receiver Jareko Taylor, playing in his first game of the season, caught 11 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Western Oregon, now 3-0 on the year, dominated on the ground, out-gaining the Javelinas 192 to 74.
The Javelinas trailed 16-3 at the half, but turned momentum their way when J.T. Hosey recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half to give Texas A&M-Kingsville the ball on the Wolf 30-yard line.
On third and 11 from the Western Oregon 15-yard line, Heatley threw a pass into the corner of the end zone that Taylor leaped and made the catch for a touchdown to cut the advantage to 16-10.
The Javelina defense then stopped the Wolves, the offense drove 37 yards down to the Western Oregon 22-yard line, but the Wolves stopped Josh Jones on fourth and one and ended the drive.
"We were moving the ball, went for it on third and one and I thought we had it, went for it on fourth and one and I thought they had it again," said Cundiff. "I thought we got some bad spots."
Western responded by driving 78 yards in 10 plays with Vinzant scoring from four yards out to make it 23-10 with 1:36 left in the third quarter.
The key play of the drive came when the ball wasn't in play.
The Javelina defense stopped the Wolves on third and eight from their own 24-yard line, but as the Western Oregon punt team was running on the field, the Javelinas were called for two 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties that kept the drive alive and moved it all the way to the Texas A&M-Kingsville 46-yard line.
"The penalties hurt us a lot," said Javelina senior receiver Steve Yaden. "We had a lot of personal foul penalties. I've never seen it lopsided like that where none of them went our way. We've got to keep our heads and play well."
The Javelinas came right back and drove 56 yards to the Wolf eight-yard line, but Heatley was intercepted in the end zone by Zach Christopherson.
Four plays later, Western broke the game open when Thorson completed a short pass to Boss who rumbled untouched 69 yards down the sideline and into the end zone to make it 30-10.
Texas A&M-Kingsville travels to Southeastern Oklahoma next week to take on the nationally ranked Savage Storm.
