Javelinas split double-header Sunday versus UTPB

Odessa, Tx - Texas A&M-Kingsville split its double-header Sunday with UT-Permain Basin, winning game one 8-2 while dropping the second game 7-8 at Roden Field.

The Javelinas (6-3, 6-3 LSC) erupted for a six-run inning top of the seventh in game one to take the victory over the Falcons (3-6, 3-6 LSC), while in game two the Javelinas were not able to complete the late comeback attempt to split their two matches on Sunday.

Game 1:

Tyler Schumann got the start for the Javelinas to open up Sunday's action, tossing six full innings with eight K's and one walk while allowing five hits and one earned run. Schumann earned the win in the decision, his second win of the season, while bolstering his lead on strikeouts the season with an LSC-best 24 K's.

His pitching put the Javelinas in a position to blow the game wide open, holding a 2-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. There, the Hogs would score six runs off six his to completely take over the game and put it out of reach. Braden Duff would get the scoring started with a two-RBI single, while Joshua Prado, Landon Salinas, Isaiah Aguialar and Easton Hewitt each brought in runners with RBIs.

The Javelinas took a one run lead before the seventh, scoring on an RBI-single from Travis Vlasek that would bring in Fisher Davis after he reached base on a fielder's choice. Vlasek notched his first hit in four games, breaking a recent cold streak.

Game 2:

Game two would not start the way the Javelinas wanted, as UTPB plated five runs through two innings to take an early four-run advantage. The Javelina would get on the board in the second though after a Vlasek double brought in Easton Hewitt to make it 1-5.

Slowly but surely, the Javelinas would crawl their way back into the contest, Vlasek kicked off the comeback attempt with a two-RBI single that cut the lead in half, making it a 3-6 ballgame. Nathan Gamez would be brought in the pinch-hit that same inning, driving in another run to make it just a two-run contest.

UTPB got a pair of runs back in the following inning however, as they would plate two scores off of Javelina wild pitches after loading the bases early in the inning. Those two runs would be costly, as the Javelinas were able to bring it to a 7-8 ballgame heading into the seventh, but could not get the tying run across the plate as they fell in the second game of the double-header.

Texas A&M-Kingsville looks to get their third series win of the season tomorrow for game four of the series at 11:00 am. Fans of the Javelinas can watch the game on FloCollege or follow the action at JavelinaBSB on X.
