Kingsville - The Javelinas' offense struggled to get runners home as the Texas A&M - Kingsville softball team fell, 3-0 and 3-1, in a doubleheader against Texas A&M - International in Kingsville on Sunday.
While the home team outhit the Dustdevils in both games, totalling 13 hits across the doubleheader, it turned those hits into just one total run. The Javelinas left a total of 19 runners on base across the matchup.Â
Despite the loss, freshman pitcher
Arianna Alaniz threw a fantastic game one, going a full seven innings with 12 strikeouts and zero earned runs while giving up just four hits and one walk. The totalled 25 strikeouts and zero earned runs across 18 innings of work this weekend. TAMIU, however, took advance of three separate two-out errors committed by the Javelina defense - two in the second and one in the third - to plate one run each and take home the 3-0 win.Â
Kingsville's bats were far more active in the second game, which saw the team collect eight total hits and load the bases three separate times. Freshman third baseman
Alexis Soliz and senior first baseman
Kaylynne Ruiz each got on base three times, as Soliz went 3-4 while Ruiz collected three walks.Â
TAMUK had trouble getting those runners home, though, as the team turned those three all-aboard instances into just one run, when senior second baseman
Sophie Campbell reached on a fielder's choice and sent freshman
Faith Nunez home in the fourth. At the time, that RBI tied the game at one-a-piece, though one score each in the fifth and sixth innings from the Dustdevils salted away the win.Â
Freshman left hander
Esther Martinez pitched the first 5.2 innings for the home team, giving up six hits and three runs (two ER), while junior right hander
Kristina Nash gave up one hit and struck out two in her 1.1 to close the ballgame.Â
The team will now head on the road to play against Cameron in a Friday doubleheader and Oklahoma Christian in a Sunday doubleheader.
