Canyon - On its final day at the West Texas Invitational, the Texas A&M - Kingsville softball team couldn't complete a late comeback bid, falling to Lincoln (Mo.), 7-6 in its only game of the day.
TAMUK finishes the weekend 3-2, winning its first three games in Canyon before dropping its final two, the team returns to Kingsville 5-6 overall as it prepares for conference play.
Though the Kingsville offense was on fire for the majority of the weekend, the cold Sunday morning saw the Javelinas muster three hits in the first four innings while giving up 12 to the Blue Tigers, who avenged their 5-1 loss to the Hogs from yesterday's early game.
Outfielder
Lindsey Evans, who has put together a stellar start to her season, had two of those hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Her fellow outfielder,
AJ Jasso, combined with
Kaylynne Ruiz to plate five of Kingsville's six runs, with Jasso scoring two on a triple in the sixth and Ruiz going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Defensively, Freshman
Esther Martinez entered the circle to start the second, pitching the final six innings while giving up just three earned runs.
The start to the game couldn't have gone any differently for the two teams, as Kingsville's bats struggled, the Blue Tigers scored three in the top of the first. Through the first five innings, the Javelinas had scored two runs, one one of which was earned. That, however, changed in the sixth, when the Hogs came alive. They scored four, two off of Jasso's triple and two off the bat of Ruiz. Not only that, but they had two runners aboard late in the inning before a ground out ended Kingsville's inning and comeback attempt.
The Javelinas will be back on this diamond this weekend to start Lone Star Conference play. As is the conference schedule for this season, they will have two doubleheaders, one on Friday, against Western New Mexico, and one on Sunday, against Eastern New Mexico. The Friday doubleheader will start at 1 p.m., while first pitch on Sunday is set for 2 p.m..
