Javelinas end Mountaineer Volleyball Classic undefeated

Gunnison, Colorado - Texas A&M-Kingsville finished off the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic a perfect 4-0 at Paul Wright Gym on Saturday.

The Javelinas (7-2, 0-0 Lone Star Conference) took down Washburn and host school Western Colorado in their two matches today, with scores of 3-2 and 3-1 respectively. Their 4-0 record makes them the only unbeaten team at the Mountaineer Volleyball Classic.

Starting with match one, the Javelinas were given a tall task in taking down Washburn. The Ichabods had received 59 votes to be a top-25 team in the American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Both teams would go back and forth with each other, until the all-important set five was reached.

In set five, Washburn stepped on the gas early. Going up 9-4 and only six points away from claiming the victory for themselves. The Javelinas would not be denied however, as a Madelyn Wallace kill would spark a 5-0 run for the Javelinas to even the set up at nine points. Eventually, it would be Ayanna Jackson to deal the finishing blow to the Ichabods, sealing the win for the Javelinas.

Jackson and Rylan Pollard would lead the way with 12 kills each, Kendall Harrington also scored in double-digits with 11 kills. Nadia Pena would continue her impressive start, notching 24 assists.

In match two, the Javelinas took on the hosting Mountaineers in the final match of the tournament. Texas A&M-Kingsville would take set one in convincing fashion, winning 25-17. Sets two and three would be much tighter however. Set two would end in a 25-22 win for the Javelinas, while set three would end in a ridiculous 31-29 victory for the Mountaineers.

The closeout set would be a convincing Javelina win however. Led by the defense of Pollard and Natalee Rush, the Javelinas would rip off a 7-2 run to close the set and finish the tournament undefeated.

Meghan Stiefer would finish on top with 16 kills for the match, Pollard and Jackson would add 13 and 12 kills respectively. Defensively, Jackson would finish with six total blocks, Pollard would add five and Rush would add four.

The Javelinas are back home Thursday at 6:00 p.m. CT to take on Texas Women's University in the Surf and Serve night.
