Javelinas take rematch verses Hilltoppers 64-57 sweeping season series

TAMUK gets second win in a row as they take down St. Edward’s on the road

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville Women's Basketball Team took to the road Thursday, heading to the Capital of the Lone Star State Austin, Texas where they would take down the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 64-57.

"Tremendous effort by our group tonight in Austin." said coach Michael Madrid. "We didn't start well but settled in the last three quarters. We had a number of players contribute to the win on both ends of the floor. We had solid balance offensively and defensively we were able to get stops when we needed them. We will enjoy this tonight and prep for our next opportunity".

Sophomore Shelby Ray shined for the Javelinas as she put together another performance for the books putting up her third double-double of the season, the last one also being against the Hilltoppers January 6th. She recorded 12 points and 13 rebounds, also being the only Javelina with a block on the night.  Not far behind in the scoring department were Junior Jayde Tschritter and sophomore Aina Maynou who were able to put up 10 points apiece. Tschritter was able to add three assists and a steal, while Maynou able to add a rebound to her line.

The Javelinas dominated on offense outshooting their opponent in all categories including FG% where they shot a whopping 51.1% from the field compared to St. Edward's 37.7%. They also shined in other shooting categories going 50.0% from three while limiting the hilltoppers to 26.7%, and 64.7% from the free throw line compared to their opponents 52.9%. They were also able to lead in Assists (14-8), while tying in steals (1-1) and only one rebound shy of tying that category as well (30-31.

The game would get going slowly for the Javelinas as they trailed early due to three Hilltopper jumpers putting St. Edwards out front 6-0 with 8:31 left in the opening quarter. TAMUK would respond however with back-to-back threes from Janessa Payne and Jayde Tschritter knotting things up at 6 with 7:02 left to go. The Hilltoppers would go on a 7-1 run before Shelby Ray would make a layup bringing the Javelina deficit to 4 with 5:06 left in the first. The Hilltoppers would extend the lead to five before Georgia Ohiaeri would single handedly bring the gap to one with a jumper and two free throws putting the score at 13-14 with 1:59 to go. The Quarter would end with St. Edward's going on a 4-2 run sending things to the second Javelinas down three 15-18.

The Hilltoppers would score first in the second making a jumper to increase their lead to 5 before Aina Maynou would get hot sinking a three and a jumper back-to-back tying things at 20 with 7:14 left in the quarter. St. Edwards would go on 6-2 run putting things at 22-26 before Ray would drain a three closing the gap to one with 6:18 left in the second. Ohiaeri would tie things up at 26 with a free throw before it would take a whole two minutes and 57 seconds game time before another score would be recorded. The Score would be a Bella Sipowicz free throw putting the Javelinas up one 27-26 with only 3:28 left before the half. The back and forth would begin as there would be 5 lead changes in the last 3:20 of the half sending things into the locker room all tied up at 33.

The Javelinas would come out of the locker room on fire as they would go on a 6-0 run courtesy of a Mia Rivers  jumper and two Veyda Lake layups putting things at 39-33 with 7:46 to go. An 8-2 Hilltopper run however would quickly tie things up at 41 with 4:54 left to go in the third. The Javelinas would turn it on and go on a 7-2 run compliments of an Aina Maynou and Alyssa O' Malley jumper, a Mia Rivers free throw and a Shelby Ray layup putting the Javelinas up 5 with 1:12 to go in the third. The Hilltoppers would make a last-minute layup sending things to the fourth with the Javelinas up three 48-45.

The fourth would start out with Jayde Tschritter trading a three and a jumper with the Hilltoppers putting the score at 53-50 with 8:23 left to go. Scoring was scarce in the fourth as a St. Edwards free throw and a Shelby Ray layup would be the only scoring before nearly two minutes would pass javelinas leading 55-51. A layup and an Abby Bala jumper would keep things at a 4-point Javelina lead. The Hilltoppers would make a free throw and Bala would drain a jumper with time winding down as the Javelinas would keep the lead 59-54.
