San Angelo, TX - Texas A&M-Kingsville could not finish the comeback late in the second half as it fell, 66-75, against Angelo State on Thursday.
The Javelinas (4-4, 0-2 Lone Star Conference) trailed by as many as seven points midway through the second half.
Jordan Henderson would kick the comeback attempt off with a late jumper as the Javelinas brought the game within a point thanks to a pair of free throws from
Nate Lacewell. The Rams (4-2, 1-1 LSC) hit two late three points however to keep the game out of reach, and the Javelinas could not muster the offense to keep up late in the game.
Three Javelinas scored in double-digits,
Isaiah Payne led the way with 16 points,
Allen Singleton finished with 14 and
Zyon Little scored 11. Henderson and Little both finished with a team-high five rebounds and Little also led the team with four assists.
The game started off just right for the Javelinas, as two early 3-pointers from Payne and
Bryson Goldsmith put the Javelinas up by nine. Angelo State quickly answered back as the teams traded runs with each other throughout the first half. The Javelinas built up another six-point lead late in the first half, but two quick points by the Rams quickly cut the lead for Texas A&M-Kingsville.Â
Angelo State eventually recaptured a one-point lead thanks to two late free throws, but
Allen Singleton had the final say in the first half, hitting a buzzer-beating two point jumper to give the Javelinas the lead heading into the break.
The second half started very similarly to the first half, and thanks to a Little layup, the Javelinas found themselves up by six. Angelo State would get hot from deep however, as three makes from deep combined with an alley-oop dunk midway through the second half put themselves up by seven. Texas A&M-Kingsville brought it within two, but could not get over the hump at the Junell Center.
Texas A&M-Kingsville travels to UT-Permian Basin to take on the UTPB Falcons Saturday at 3:00 p.m. CST. Fans of the Javelinas can watch live on Flosports or follow live coverage with live stats or at JavelinaMBB on Twitter.
