Kingsville - An offensive explosion powered Texas A&M-Kingsville to a clean sweep over Eastern New Mexico Saturday at the Steinke Physical Education Center.
The Javelinas (13-11, 5-8 Lone Star Conference) scored 48 kills and hit .327 Â percent in the match. Six Javelinas scored at least four kills, and Texas A&M-Kingsville pelted the Greyhounds (5-19, 2-11) all match long to secure the win for the Javelinas.
Rylan Pollard led the way offensively with 13 kills,
Ayanna Jackson added nine kills and
Rylie Barnett had seven kills.
Nadia Pena would secure 20 assists and
Tayae Garcia had a team high 12 digs for the Javelinas.
Despite the match being a 3-0 sweep in favor of Texas A&M-Kingsville, the sets were all closely contested games. Set one would be a back-and-forth affair in which both teams would trade small leads with each other. Eventually, the Javelinas would start to pull away thanks to two straight aces from
Isabel Rodriguez. That would lead to a 7-1 run that put the set away for the Javelinas.
Set two was a dominant set for the Javelinas, building a 10-point lead thanks to three kills and two more service aces. The Greyhounds made it interesting late in the set, but two straight kills from Pollard would be enough to ice set two for the Javelinas.
In the Final set of the match, Eastern New Mexico came out desperate to avoid the sweep. They would build a six-point lead early in the set and held a four-point lead midway through the set. Slowly but surely however, the Javelinas would crawl their way back and eventually tie the match thanks to a
Meghan Stiefer kill. With momentum fully on their side, the Javelinas took care of business and took the win against Eastern New Mexico.
