Smith's career day not enough as Javelinas fall in overtime

C.J. Smith put up a career-high 33 points on the afternoon

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - It was a career day for Senior guard C.J. Smith as the Javelinas came back from from as much as a 12-point deficit, but the Hogs fell just short in overtime to Oklahoma Christian, 81-88.

The Javelinas (3-11, LSC 1-8) go 0-2 on the weekend after dropping the matchup against UAFS two days earlier. The Eagles (7-8, LSC 4-5) pick up their fourth win in their last five games.

The action was hotly contested all night long. Both teams took turns leading in the first half as they traded runs between them with neither squad able to gain a large advantage for long as the Eagles led by three going into the break. As the teams came out of the locker room, OCU was finally able to create a bit of breathing room, going on a quick 9-2 run to push their lead to 12.

The Javelinas fought back as the Eagles tried to hold off a definitive Javelina comeback, leading by as much as 12 with under 10 minutes remaining in the game. However, the Hogs continued to show the resiliency they have shown all season. Spearheaded by the Smith, the Hogs erased the deficit and even threatened to win the game as it came down to the wire, but a late layup by the Eagles on their last possession of regulation sent us to overtime, 74-74.

The Eagles held the advantage at the opening of the overtime period, holding a four point advantage as the clock ticked under two minutes in the contest. Smith cut the deficit to two points with a layup, but accurate free throw shooting by the Eagles successfully kept a second Javelina comeback attempt at bay, taking the win in overtime, 88-81.

Smith finished the night with 33 points on 10-of-17 shooting, a new career high by six points. He also finished with a new season-high in rebounding, pulling down six total boards as well as leading the team in assists with six, too.

Three other Javelinas posted double digit scoring on the afternoon. Allen Singleton finished with 13 points alongside a team-leading and career-high eight rebounds as well as four assists.

Zyon Little continued to impress in his debut year for the Hogs, totaling up 14 points and four rebounds. Little also picked up a team-leading and new high of three steals in the contest.

Jason Clark put up another good performance as well, putting up 12 points, four rebounds, and a steal. Clark has put up more than 10 points in three of his last four games.
