PORTALES, NM – Texas A&M-Kingsville's softball team fell in the opening game of its final series of the season on the road against Eastern New Mexico, 4-2 on Saturday evening.
The Greyhounds (25-27, 17-23 LSC) stole the game late from the Javelinas (22-25, 19-20 LSC), pushing four runs across in the sixth inning erasing a two-run deficit en route to secure the win in the first of three games this weekend.
TAMUK struck first, taking the lead in the third inning as freshman Jackie Garza singled to center field as sophomore Rylee Oborski came around to score from first advancing to home from third on a throwing error from center to third base.
Junior Javelina hurler Beth Montes spun a gem through five innings with only one Greyhound reaching scoring position till the sixth inning.
The Blue and Gold expanded its lead to 2-0, in the top half of the sixth as senior Matisen Onofrei doubled to left field scoring freshman Sarah Montes from second base pinch running for Aaliyah Ortiz who doubled to lead off the inning.
ENMU finally found an offensive response in the bottom half of the sixth, initially tying the game at 2-2, with a two-RBI double to left field after the Greyhounds loaded the bases to open the inning.
The Greyhounds pushed two more runs across to end the inning with an RBI single to center before TAMUK's senior center fielder Jory Cervantes through a runner at third on the play to end the inning.
In the seventh, the Javs were unable to muster a rally going down in order.
TAMUK will now play ENMU in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon central to close out the regular season.
