Javelinas fall to No. 3 Pioneers 57-48 at Kitty Magee Arena

Junior Georgia Ohiaeri led the contest with 17 points

DENTON. Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team fell 57-48 to No. 4/3 Texas Woman's on Saturday in Lone Star Conference action at Kitty Magee Arena.

The Javelinas (14-10, 11-7 LSC) couldn't overcome the Pioneers (23-1, 18-0 LSC), despite outshooting the opposition as TAMUK sunk shots at a 37.8% clip while holding TWU to 34.5%. Additionally, junior Georgia Ohiaeri led the contest in scoring and rebounds, recording 17 points and finishing one board shy of a double-double.

Sophomore Mia Rivers joined Ohiaeri with double-digit scoring figures as she logged 10 points with three assists. Senior Brianna Pena also posted a solid stat line, scoring eight and hauling in seven rebounds.

Ohiaeri opened the contest by hitting a pair of three-pointers to deliver a 6-4 lead early in the first quarter. Rivers then knocked down a jumper, and sophomore Veyda Lake converted two from the charity stripe for a 12-6 Blue and Gold edge. TWU answered with four points of their own for a 12-9 score entering the second stanza.

A back-and-forth start to the frame saw TWU trim their deficit to three, prompting a freshman Shelby Ray layup and Pena triple that resulted in a 23-15 TAMUK lead. The Pioneers then sparked a six-point spurt for a 23-21 score. The squads once more traded blows before a River triple sent the Javs into the locker room with a 28-23 edge.

Ohiaeri scored six of the Javelina's seven points in the third quarter as TWU knotted the contest at 34 with 6:07 left in the frame. The opposition then scored six straight en route to a 42-35 score line at the start of the fourth.

TAMUK decreased their deficit to three using a six-point surge that saw back-to-back makes by Pena and a bucket by Ray. A free throw by Rivers later saw a 50-47 score line favoring TWU with a minute remaining in the contest. The Pioneers then used solid defense and converted free throws down the stretch to claim a 57-48 victory.

The Javelinas return to Kingsville, Texas, for a Play 4 Kay Breast Cancer Awareness matchup with Midwestern State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., ahead of a Senior Day contest with Cameron Saturday at 1 p.m.
