FORT SMITH, Ark. - Texas A&M Kingsville's men's basketball team made program history on Saturday afternoon in its 72-53 win over UAFS holding the Lions to just nine points in the first half. This marked the fewest points allowed by a Javelina team in a half in the modern era.
"It was truly an all-around team effort," said head coach Johnny Estelle on the win. "It was great to see the guys respond after a tough loss on Thursday. Anytime you hold a team to that few points in the first half you are setting yourself to win, and winning on the road in the LSC is never easy."
With the win, the Javelinas (16-8, 10-6 LSC), hold onto their one game advantage atop the East Division over St. Edward's.
On top of a stellar defensive performance, C.J. Smith and Dillon Gooding posted double-digit points going for 22 and 19 respectively. Smith's offensive outburst marked a season high for the junior from Mansfield, Texas.
In the historic first half, TAMUK held the Lions to just 3-of-24 shooting from the field for just 12.5 percent shooting.
In contrast, the Javs shot 43 percent from the field in the first half including 8-of-14 from 3-point range helping them get out to a healthy 34-9 lead at the break.
The second half was better for the Lions, shooting 56 percent from the field, but UAFS never got the Javelina lead under double digits.
Gooding posted 14 of his 19 points in the second half going 4-of-5 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the line to lead TAMUK to the 72-53 victory.
