Javelinas complete sweep of Mustangs with another strong offensive performance

TAMUK gets first sweep of the season run-ruling WNMU to end three-game series

SILVER CITY, N.M. - After run-ruling Western New Mexico in the first two games of a three-game series, the Javelina softball team completed the sweep with an 8-0 win in five innings on Monday in the Land of Enchantment.

"The biggest takeaway is our pitching, they are really starting to turn the corner and our hitters are really starting to feel comfortable and going to work in the box," said coach Orlando Salinas. "I'm really proud with how this team has responded, and coming out here getting the sweep with the way we played has me and us as a team really excited for what's to come."

Beth Montes (3-2), spun a gem in the circle for the Javelinas earning a complete game shutout win, allowing only allowing four hits while striking out eight Mustang batters.

The Javelinas (6-8, 3-3 LSC) jumped on the Mustangs (3-14, 1-8 LSC) early once again, putting up four runs in the first inning. TAMUK worked the bases loaded with no outs before Aaliyah Ortiz scored Jory Cervantes from third on a fielder's choice for the first run, and two batters later Matisen Onofrei launched her second home run of the weekend to left center for a bases clearing three-RBI shot.

After reaching on an error and stealing second to open the second inning, Cervantes scored again on an RBI single up the middle by Breanna Carr pushing the TAMUK lead to five. Kayla Gonzales followed up with the team's tenth home run of the weekend taking the lead to 7-0, Javelinas.

In the third, Onofrei led the inning off with her second home run of the day with a solo shot to center field.

The Mustangs threatened to extend the game in the bottom of the fifth working the bases loaded with only one out, but Montes slammed the door shut with a strikeout and forced popout to short to bring the run-rule into effect with TAMUK taking the 8-0 win.
