Hot first half too much to overcome as Javelinas fall to Chaps

The Chaps shot 10-19 from three in the first half to create a buffer too large for the Hogs

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team was in Lubbock for the second game of its three game road stint to take on the Chaps of Lubbock Christian. The Hogs put up a fight, but a red hot first half from LCU proved too big of a buffer for the Javelinas to overcome as they fell in the Rip Griffin Center on Tuesday afternoon.

The Javelinas (2-7, LSC 0-4) have dropped four straight and remain winless in Lone Star Conference play. The Chaps (8-3, LSC 4-0) continue their win streak, now up to four games.

Both teams had no trouble finding the basket at the start of the game, trading runs back and forth in the first ten minutes of play as the score stood at 16-18 with a little more than 11 minutes on the clock in the half. From there, LCU would find the hot hand, nailing six three-pointers in the final 11 minutes of the half.

The Chaps outscored the Javelinas 34-11 to close out the first half, propelled by a 10-of-19 performance from behind the arc as the Hogs went into the locker room trailing by 25.

The Javelinas would not go out quietly as the second half of play opened. The Hogs quickly went on a 14-3 run within the first five minutes of the half to cut the lead to 14. Unfortunately, that would be as low as the lead got for the rest of the contest, as the Chaps regained their shooting form and quickly pushed the lead back up to 21.

The Javelinas attempted one last push to get back into the game as the clock ticked under 10 minutes, going on one last run 10-0 run to cut the lead to 14 once more. The Chaps would cut the momentum again, however, and extend the lead back to 20 to halt another late-game surge from the Hogs.

Zyon Little led the scoresheet for the Javelinas as the freshman put up a career-high 18 points on the afternoon, going 6-of-11 from the field and 2-of-5 from three-point range. Little also led the squad in rebounding, grabbing eight total boards - also a new career high - and adding an assist as well.

Kendrick Washington put up 11 on the scoresheet, nailing 3-of-5 three-pointers alongside four rebounds. Allen Singleton was close behind Little in the rebound department with seven total boards to his name.

C.J. Smith led the team defensively with two steals. Smith has snagged at least one steal in every game but one this season.

Andre Walker II dished out a team-high three assists for the game and added eight points of his own.
