Javelinas stay hot taking first game of St. Mary’s Thanksgiving Classic

TAMUK takes down Bison in their first game of tournament play

SAN ANTONIO, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team played game one of two in the two-day St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic, where they took down the Oklahoma Bison 68-62.
 
 " Always good to win a game on the road against a quality opponent." said coach Michael Madrid. " We need to clean up our game. We have entirely too many turnovers and it will catch up to us. Defensively, our rotations and concentration need to get better. With all that being said, a win is a win and we will take it and look forward to our next opportunity".

Junior Jayde Tschritter was the leading scorer of the day for the Javelinas once again with 19 points going 6-7 from the field and 4-5 from three. Also in double digits on the day was Junior Veyda Lake with 13 points going 5-7 from the field.
 
TAMUK outshot their opponent for the fourth straight game in a row going 48.9.% from the field compared to the Bison 38.7%, as well as 50.0% from long range compared to Oklahoma Baptists 31.8%. The Bison would outshoot the Javelinas at the line however going 77.8% to the Javelinas 61.9%. TAMUK would also outrebound their opponent once again with 36 compared to the Bison 30.

The game would start off with the Javelinas going on a 12-5 run leading the way via 8 of those points coming from Jayde Tschritter the Bison would respond however with a jumper and free throw making it 12-8 with 2:35 left to go in the quarter. The three-point barrage would continue this time by Aina Maynou as she increases the lead to 15-8 with 1:32 left in the first. The quarter would round out with a Oklahoma Baptist jumper, sending the game to the second 18-10.

 Abby Bala would add two threes to her line within the span of a minute and 15 seconds starting out the second putting the score at 24-13 with 8:45 left to go. The Bison would then go on a 9-0 run before Veyda Lake stopped the damage putting it at 29-24, with 3:11 to go in the half. Both squads would trade buckets going into the half with TAMUK leading 34-28.

The third would start with a Tschritter fast break score before a two-minute scoring drought would be broken up by a Janessa Payne three putting the score at 39-30 with 7:13 left in the third. Neither squad was able to get anything to go in until a Devon Williams hook shot puts things at 42-33 with 4:40 left. The quarter would end with the Bison going on a 10-5 run cutting the Javelina lead to 4 going into the fourth.

The fourth would start with another Tschritter three before a Bison 13-3 run would put them in front 57-59 with 5:02 left in the game. Shelby Ray would respond with a jumper however tying things at 59 apiece with 4:43 to go. The Bison, however, would not score again until the 1:30 point in which the Javelinas had already gone on a 4-0 run making the score 63-62 Javelinas. The Javelinas would not allow another Bison score, closing out the score and day one of the tournament 68-62.

The Javelinas are back out at the St. Mary's Thanksgiving Classic in San Antonio, Texas. This time matching up against the Missouri Western State Griffon November 25th at 2:00 PM CST.
