Three-point shooting too much to overcome as Javelinas fall to Eagles

The Javelinas shot 37.5 percent on the night from the field, improved from the night before

CHADRON, Nebraska – The Javelinas put up an improved offensive performance, but it was not enough to overcome a hot-handed Chadron State as the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team fell in Nebraska, 70-109.

The Javelinas (1-1, LSC 0-0) were improved on the offensive end of the floor from Friday night, shooting 37.5 percent from the floor and from three. However, the Chadron State Eagles (1-1, RMAC 0-0) were too hot, going 13-for-32 on the night from three and just below 50 percent from the field.

Early in the first half, TAMUK held the lead at multiple points before CSC grabbed the lead, 12-11, with 13:12 left in the half. The Eagles would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. The Hogs would keep the deficit around 10 points for most of the half, but the Eagles sparked a late run to take a 17-point lead into halftime.

The lead would only expand in the second half after multiple streaks of three-pointers from Chadron. The Javelinas were unable to keep pace, going 11-of-35 from the floor in the half and 2-of-6 from three.

C.J. Smith led the Javelinas in scoring for the second night in a row, bagging 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting while also snagging a rebound and three assists. Isaiah Payne was close behind with 11 points of his own as well as 2 rebounds and an assist.

Kavon Booker grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds (two offensive, five defensive) and five points, as well as a block. Marcus Jones-Green poked out two steals while four other Hogs collected steals of their own.
