No. 74 Javelinas drop heartbreaker to No. 10 Aggies

TAMUK drops 4-3 decision

ARLINGTON, Texas – For the second straight day, the No. 74 Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis team played a ranked opponent in a match that went down to the final flight, but they suffered a narrow, 4-3 defeat to the No. 10 Cameron Aggies in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Semifinals on Friday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center in Arlington, Texas.

The Aggies started the match by winning the No. 3 flight in doubles play, but TAMUK's No. 1 pair of junior Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) and sophomore Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) answered by upending the nation's No. 10 ranked doubles tandem of Anastasia Uspenskaia and Magda Wawrowska by a score of 6-3.

The doubles portion of the match was decided in the second flight, where sophomores Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) and Noemi Sante (Dusseldorf, Germany) took on Vasilisa Polunova and Karolina Glowinska in a contest that was determined by a tiebreaker. The tandems split the first eight points, but ter Morsche and Sante collected the final three rallies to put TAMUK ahead, 1-0.

The singles portion of the match started with two straight sets decisions, one for Cameron in the fifth flight and a 6-2, 6-3 victory by sophomore Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) in the second flight for the Javs. Sante won the No. 3 match by a 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 score, only for CU to respond by capturing the sixth contest.

Both the first and fourth flights were decided by narrow margins, but the Aggies found a way to come out on top in both instances. The No. 1 match finished, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-2) and the final on the fourth court was 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
