Oborski’s seven RBIs help lead Javelinas to sweep of Pioneers

TAMUK tops the 40 win threshold for the third time

DENTON, Texas – Freshman Rylee Oborski (Salado, Texas) drove in seven runs and freshman Aaliyah Ortiz (San Antonio, Texas) homered twice as the No. 5 Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team swept a doubleheader from the Texas Woman's Pioneers by scores of 16-3 and 8-1 on Saturday evening in Lone Star Conference action at Dianne Baker Field in Denton, Texas.

The Javelinas are now 41-8, the third time in program history they've reached 40 wins in a season. In conference, the Javs are 21-7, while TWU is 10-33 overall and 5-23 in league play.

GAME ONE

A pair of walks got the second inning started for the Javs and Oborski plated her team's first two runs with a single to right. Senior Jennifer Giesey (Crystal Lake, Ill.) lifted a sacrifice fly into center that made the score 3-0 and Oborski proceeded to steal third and scored on a Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas) single.

The Pioneers pushed a pair of runs across in their half of the second, but TAMUK blew the game open with a nine-run fourth. Sophomore Natalie Rodriguez (Edinburg, Texas) and Oborski started the rally with back-to-back doubles and Oborski came across again on another hit by Kelly. The Javelinas then loaded the bases to bring up junior Matisen Onofrei (Mesa, Phoenix) and she brought in all three runners by ripping a two-bagger into the gap in right-center.

The Javs loaded bases again later in the inning, Rodriguez knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and Oborski followed with her second hit of the frame, a two-run double that made the score 12-2. Oborski would score the final run of the fourth on an error to conclude the rally.

Three more Blue and Gold runs crossed the plate in the fifth, thanks to a run-score double courtesy of sophomore Kayla Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) and an Ortiz two-run round-tripper. Sophomore Beth Montes (San Antonio, Texas) did the rest in the circle. Montes improved to 13-2 by giving up only two earned runs in five innings.

GAME TWO

TAMUK's game two starter was sophomore Lizette Del Angel (Robstown, Texas), who logged her second win of the week by twirling a complete game in which she allowed only one run on five hits. Del Angel retired 14 of the last 16 batters she faced and only walked one while posting six strikeouts. In her last 17 innings, the sophomore from Robstown has allowed only one earned run.

Not much run support was required for Del Angel, but the Javs immediately staked her to a 3-0 led, thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Onofrei and another two-run Ortiz tater. TAMUK doubled its lead in the third, when a walk and an error put two on and three straight RBI singles from Oborski, Giesey and Kelly made the score 6-0.

The Pioneers tallied their only run in the bottom of the third, but the Javs' answer came a half-inning later in the form of a Kaylee Dietrich (Phoenix, Ariz.) RBI double and a run scoring groundout from Oborski. The last three innings went by scoreless as Del Angel nailed down a Saturday sweep.

The Javelinas have one more regular season doubleheader remaining and it pits them against Texas A&M International on Saturday.
