Javelinas wrangle Rattlers in conference play

TAMUK improve to 8-2 in the Lone Star Conference

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team has improved to 8-2 in conference play following a 66-51, victory over St. Mary's at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas, on Saturday.

"They've put in a lot of work and deserve the success," said coach Michael Madrid. "They understand it can be taken away pretty quick. They have a hard hat mentality; bring your lunch pail every day to work, let's get better. It's a good regional win at home, and we're looking forward to getting better tomorrow when we practice and lift weights."

The Javelinas (15-6, 8-2 LSC) defeated the Rattlers (2-18, 1-8 LSC), earning their 11th straight win at home to start the 2022 season, placing them one triumph short of the 12-0 start that the 2009-10 team managed before finishing the year 12-1 in the SPEC.

Posting 13 points and finishing one board shy of a double-double, sophomore Devon Williams (Gonzales. Texas) was one of three Blue and Gold student-athletes that finished with double-digit scoring figures. Junior Mia Cherry (Brock Texas) led the for the second consecutive game as she recorded 15 points, tying her season-best. Additionally, Cherry recorded four rebounds and three steals in the winning effort. Fellow third-year Javelina Brianna Pena (Weslaco, Texas) rounded out the trio as she went 5-9 from the field, scoring 11 while earning five assists.

Freshman Mia Rivers (College Station, Texas) played her position well, providing six dimes to go along with three steals and five points, while freshman Jayde Tschritter ( (Corpus Christi, Texas) scored nine courtesy of three triples.

TAMUK started hot, snagging the first 11 points of the game with Pena scoring seven straight, including a three-pointer. The teams traded buckets for the rest of the period before Tshritter nailed another three ball that handed the Javs a 21-10 lead.

The Rattlers rallied to begin the second, starting the period on a 6-0 run, resulting in a 21-16 scoreline. The Javs answered back with a 7-3 run of their own, featuring multiple buckets from sophomore Georgia Ohiaeri (Las Vegas, Nevada), putting the Blue and Gold up 28-19. StMU chipped the Javelina lead down to six to close out the half, thanks to a Syndey Hardeman three-pointer.

The Javs came out of the locker room on a mission as they outscored the Rattlers 18-6, holding the opposition to a 25% shooting mark while forcing eight turnovers. Tshritter, Jones, and Cherry all sunk triples, handing TAMUK a 24-point lead.

Cherry nailed another three-pointer to open the final frame providing the largest Blue and Gold lead of the day at 21, as the Javelinas kept the Rattlers at arm's length the remainder of the contest, earning the 66-51 victory.

The Javelinas will hit the road next week, as they visit San Angelo, Texas on Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. showdown against Angelo State before visiting UT Permian Basin for another LSC matchup, Saturday at 2 p.m.
