PORTLAND, Texas – Junior Saidi Castillo (Kingsville, Texas) tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout and she was backed by an offense that put together a five-run, third-inning rally in a 7-0 victory for the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team over the Ouachita Baptist Tigers on Friday evening at the Portland Sports Complex in Portland, Texas.
The Javelinas have now won four straight and own a 4-1 record in 2022. OBU is 0-6.
TAMUK wasted no time getting on the board, thanks in part to senior Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas), who started the game by drawing a walk, then stole second and third and scored when sophomore Kayla Gonzales (San Antonio, Texas) reached on an error.
After Castillo set down the side in order in the first and second, the Javs put two runners on with one out in the third to bring up freshman Aaliyah Ortiz (San Antonio, Texas). Ortiz smacked a single back through the middle to tally Gonzales with the day's second run. The next hitter was senior Kaylee Dietrich (Phoenix, Ariz.) and she dropped a two-run double into the left field corner to make the score 4-0. Two more two-baggers in the inning, courtesy of senior Jennifer Giesey (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Kelly each brought in runs to increase the Javelina lead to six.
Kelly picked up her second RBI of the day on a fifth-inning single, but Castillo already had more then enough support. She allowed only three singles, benefited from two double plays turned behind her and faced the minimum in each of the last three innings. Castillo's final line included only two walks to go with six strikeouts.
