Javelinas fall to No. 15 Yellowjackets, 68-57, on Day One of Holiday Hoops Classic

The Javelinas will be back in action on Saturday as they face off against No. 13 Georgia Southwestern State at South Point Arena

LAS VEGAS- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team fell to No. 15 Montana State Billings, 68-57, as apart of the D2 Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena on Friday.

"We ran into an extremely talented and well-coached team today," said coach Michael Madrid. "We were extremely inconsistent offensively, and I thought that carried over to some defensive breakdowns. I'm proud of our fight to stay in the game, and a few bad breaks allowed Billings to break it open late in the 4th. We will learn from this and move forward. We have a tremendous opportunity tomorrow to play against another solid team."

The Javelinas (5-4, 2-2 LSC) couldn't overcome the No. 15 Yellowjackets (11-1, 2-0 GNAC) despite a solid performance from junior Georgia Ohiaeri, who logged 16 points and seven rebounds in her return to Las Vegas. Additionally, the reigning LSC Offensive Player of the Week, Brianna Pena, scored 11 points with three assists, while freshman Shelby Ray added eight to TAMUK's total on 3-for-5 shooting.

Nobody racked up more assists in the contest than sophomore Mia Rivers, who dished out six, collecting six rebounds and seven points in the process.

The Javs wasted no time getting on the board as an Ohiaeri layup on the first possession combined with a pair of Rivers free throws and a Pena jumper for a 6-2 Blue and Gold lead. MSUB answered with a spurt of their own that knotted the contest at six prior to a sophomore Veyda Lake layup that broke the deadlock. Chloe Williams then hit a triple for the Jackets sparking seven unanswered MSUB points. A sophomore Janessa Payne three-pointer shortly after brought TAMUK within two before entering the second quarter trailing 18-12.

The Yellowjackets scored the first six points of the second stanza as a Rivers layup resulted in a 24-14 score line favoring MSUB. The teams then traded buckets before consecutive makes by Lake and Pena cut the deficit to nine. From there, MSUB built a 16-point lead ahead of a Pena jumper and a pair from Rivers at the charity stripe for a 37-25 halftime score.

Ohiaeri started the scoring with a hook shot to open the third quarter. MSUB later hit consecutive triples to take an 18-point lead before a Ray three-pointer halted the Yellowjacket run. Ray knocked down another deep three to close the quarter facing a 55-43 deficit.

TAMUK cut the deficit to 10 thanks to an Ohiaeri and-one with eight minutes remaining in the contest. Shortly after, a Pena jumper and a fast break layup courtesy of Ray saw TAMUK claw within seven and a 58-52 score. An Ohiaeri layup followed, putting the Javs within six. However, MSUB rebuilt their lead for a 68-57 final score.

The Javelinas will be back in action on Saturday as they wrap up the D2 Holiday Hoops Classic with a 3:15 p.m. CT matchup against No. 13 Georgia Southwestern State at South Point Arena.
