Javelinas close out D2 Holiday Hoops Classic with loss to No. 13 Georgia Southwestern State,63-59

The Javelinas fell despite outrebounding their opponents, 35-29

LAS VEGAS- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team came up short against No. 13 Georgia Southwestern State, 63-59, in what represented the Javelina's final contest at the D2 Holiday Hoops Classic at South Point Arena.

The Javelinas (5-5, 2-2 LSC) fell to the No. 13 Lady Hurricanes (9-1, 2-0 PBC) as TAMUK logged nine three-pointers and outrebounded their opponents, 39-25.

Junior Georgia Ohiaeri and senior Brianna Pena each scored 12, with Ohiaeri collecting six boards and Pena four. Sophomore Mia Rivers finished with 10 points, while classmates Janessa Payne and Jayde Tschritter knocked down three triples apiece. Additionally, Payne led the contest in rebounds with seven.

Payne came out shooting, sinking one from beyond the arc to open the scoring. A seven-point Lady Hurricane spurt was answered by another Payne triple that sparked a six-point Blue and Gold run that was capped off by a sophomore Veyda Lake layup. A three-pointer by Pena, along with a pair of second-chance buckets courtesy of Ohiaeri and Pena, allowed TAMUK to take a 17-13 edge heading into the second stanza.

The Lady Hurricanes scored the first seven points of the frame before a freshman Shelby Ray jumper resulted in a 20-19 GSW lead. Five more Lady Hurricane points followed as a much-needed triple by Tschritter kept the Javelinas within striking distance. GSW threatened to pull away, building an eight-point lead before four consecutive points by Ohiaeri and a final Pena bucket sent TAMUK into the locker room down 32-28.

Facing a four-point deficit in the second half, Rivers and Tschritter nailed consecutive three-pointers, affording TAMUK a 34-32 edge. The teams then traded points for the majority of the period before GSW closed the frame with six unanswered points and a 41-36 lead.

A jumper by Pena and triple by Tschritter midway through the fourth brought the Javelinas within one. Still, the Lady Hurricanes responded swiftly, using a pair of free throws and a three-pointer by Jacquelyn Levay to rebuild the GSW lead. From there, the Lady Hurricanes closed things out, collecting a 63-59 victory.

Following the winter break, the Javelinas will return to the hardwood on Friday, Dec. 30, as they take on St. Mary's at 3 p.m. in San Antonio, ahead of a New Year's Day clash with St. Edwards at 1 p.m. in Austin.
