Javelinas fall to Lady Chaps 76-61 in final home game of 2022

Senior Brianna Pena led the contest with 22 points

KINGSVILLE, Texas- The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team fell to No.NR/RV Lubbock Christian 76-61 in the final home contest of 2022 at the Steinke Physical Education Center.

"I thought it was a situation where LCU came in highly motivated and extremely well coached," said coach Michael Madrid. "They had a game plan to attack us inside and they did that really well. I didn't think we matched their intensity or their energy, so we were playing from behind the whole game and that's tough to do."

The Javelinas (5-3, 2-2 LSC) fell to the Lady Chaps (5-3, 2-2 LSC), despite senior Brianna Pena leading the contest with 22 points and three steals. Additionally, Pena went 10-14, including 2-3 from beyond the arc, with three assists. Freshman Mia Rivers also posted 11 points, and sophomore Janessa Payne logged eight rebounds.

Pena kick-started the game with a bucket before a seven-point LCU surge saw the Lady Chaps go up by five. Sophomore Veyda Lake sunk a layup shortly after, which cut the Javelina deficit to three. From there, LCU ended the quarter on an 11-0 run to go up 22-9.

The Javelinas outscored the Lady Chaps in a second stanza that began with consecutive makes by Rivers and Lake. LCU rebuilt their double-digit lead before Pena hit a jumper and knocked down a three-pointer, trimming their deficit to eight. The opposition kept TAMUK at arm's length for the remained of the half as a last-second shot by freshman Shelby Ray resulted in a 37-26 score line.

The teams traded buckets for the beginning of the third quarter, as a junior Georgia Ohiaeri triple saw a 45-33 score that favored LCU. The Lady Chaps then went on a 10-2 spurt with a freshman Alyssa O' Malley jumper marking the only Blue and Gold points of the run. Now trailing 55-35, Pena scored the final five points of the frame for a 55-40 score entering the final quarter.

Each squad scored 21 in the fourth, with Pena, Rivers, Payne, and Ohiaeri all sinking multiple shots before falling 76-61.

The Javelinas will now head to Las Vegas, Nevada, to participate in the Holiday Hoops Classic, where they'll play Montana State Billings on Friday, Dec. 16, and Georgia Southw
