KINGSVILLE, Texas-Â Despite a superb second-half effort, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team fell 71-65 to Colorado Mesa in nonconference action on Javelina Administration Appreciation Night at the Steinke Physical Education Center on Friday.Â
Â
"The first half was not very good," said coach Johnny Estelle. "We were really rushing shots and was out of sync, and that's got a lot to do with Mesa. They're a veteran team, and a well-coached team…You gotta give credit. Mesa did a really good job in every phase of the game; we couldn't keep them out of the paint… we've got to go back and correct that and get better on offense."
Â
The Javelinas (2-1, 0-0 LSC) outscored the Mavericks (3-0, 0-0 RMAC) 45-38 in the second half, as guard C.J. Smith led the match in scoring, dropping 17. TAMUK had three more reach double-digit scoring figures, with guard Sammy Brooks scoring 14, including four three-pointers, guard Isaiah Payne logging 12 points, and forward Kavon Booker 10. Additionally, Booker paced the squad in rebounds, snagging seven boards.Â
Â
CMU stole the first nine points of the contest before a pair of Dillon Gooding free throws cut the deficit to seven. The Mavericks grew their lead to 17 before a triple by Payne at the buzzer resulted in a 33-20 halftime score favoring CMU.
Â
The Mavericks nailed a three-pointer to begin the second half before the Javelinas sparked a 9-0 run that saw back-to-back baskets by Booker and a Brooks triple. Now leading by seven, CMU rattled off a seven-point spurt of their own for a 43-29 score line. With 9:54 remaining in the stanza, an Owen Koonce three-pointer handed the Mavericks a 50-35 edge.
Â
The Javelinas, however, kept battling, using Booker and Smith jumpers as well as another Brooks three-pointer to cut the deficit to 10. Brooks then caught fire, scoring the following eight points of the contest by himself in a run that featured consecutive triples. Shortly after, Payne hit a layup resulting in a 58-54 score line still favoring CMU. Blaise Threatt answered with a three-pointer and a jumper in the paint to hand his team a seven-point edge, which wasn't relinquished as CMU took the contest 71-65.
Â
TAMUK will be back in action on Saturday as they host Western Colorado at 6 p.m. in the SPEC. Additionally, the Javelinas will be hosting a canned food drive with fans who donate a nonperishable food item receiving free admission into this weekend's contest.
