Javelinas to host Midwestern State and Texas Woman's in pivotal LSC matchups

The team puts its undefeated home record on the line with a Friday night matchup with the Mustangs and a Senior Day contest Saturday with the Pioneers

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Texas A&M-Kingsville volleyball team will test its undefeated home record as they host Midwestern State in a Pink Out matchup Friday at 6 p.m. before a Senior Day contest with Texas Woman's Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Steinke Physical Education Center.

The Javelinas (16-8, 8-3 LSC) come in hot, with a 6-0 record inside the SPEC, in which they claimed the last 18 sets at home. Additionally, the Javs have won their previous five matches, marking their second winning streak of at least five games in the 2022 season. Last week, TAMUK took on three opponents, first sweeping St. Edwards before picking up a five-set win on the road over Angelo State and taking down UT Permian Basin in three sets.

TAMUK sits fifth in the Lone Star Conference Standings after the trio of wins where junior Jackie Alanis and senior Nicole Murff boasted stellar performances. Alanis logged 17 kills in the sweep over SEU before dishing out 17 more against Angelo State and 16 in a matchup with UTPB. She hit .258 across 11 sets, with 50 kills coming at a .258 percent clip. Meanwhile, Murff anchored a Javelina defense that held opponents to a .118 hitting percentage while averaging 6.09 digs per set and totaling 67, the most in the LSC.

The Mustangs (6-19, 4-8 LSC) will face TAMUK as the team looks to block out breast cancer and raise funds for breast cancer research. 200 lucky fans will have the opportunity to get limited edition pink Javelina volleyball shirts with a QR code on the back that leads to a donation website. Additionally, fans can go to www.javelinaathletics.com/pinkout to learn more.

Like the Javelinas, MSU was busy on the court last week, first taking a five-set win over Texas Woman's and sweeping Western New Mexico. They wrapped things up with a three-set nonconference loss to East Central. Despite their record, the team boasts one of the league's top defenders, with Taygon Jones sitting second to Murff in digs per set on the year averaging 5.15. Jones also ranks fifth with 422 total digs. Sadie Portman provides the bulk of the Mustang offense logging 228 kills in 2022, while Aaliyah Burras has been their most efficient attacker with a .286 hitting percentage.

The Pioneers (13-11, 4-8 LSC) will be a part of Senior Day in the SPEC as the Javs will honor Murff, Kailey Estrada, Tammy Jo Grohman, Jordan Schenkel, Bryce Earl, and Madeleine Stolzer prior to the contest.

TWU has struggled in conference play after a stellar nonconference campaign that saw an eight-game win streak across the Denton Volleyfest and Lone Star Conference Crossover tournaments. The Pioneers are one of the top serving teams in the LSC, with Tori Woods currently ranked second in aces with 36 while sitting fourth in aces per set at 0.41. TWU has several others maintaining spots on the statistical leader board, as Yanley Pabon is fifth in digs per set, averaging 4.73, and Trixie Ochoa is fifth with a .311 hitting percentage.
