Williams named LSC Defensive Player of the Week

First career honor for Williams, first for TAMUK of the season and first since December 14, 2020

RICHARDSON, Texas (LSC/TAMUK) - Following a weekend upset of the defending Division II National Champions, freshman Devon Williams (Gonzales, Texas) was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program in a release from the league office on Monday.

LSC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Gonzales anchored a stout Javelina defense that made history with the program's first-ever win over the No. 1-ranked team with a 59-42 victory over Lubbock Christian on Friday. She pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and added two steals and a block alongside eight points as TAMUK held LCU to its lowest scoring output since 2010.

It was also the largest margin of defeat for the Lady Chaps since December 2016 as the Javelinas snapped LCU's 22-game conference winning streak. The 29.4% shooting clip (15-for-51) was the lowest by Lubbock Christian all season and lowest since the 2017-18 campaign, while the 14.3% rate (4-for-28) from long range was also the lowest of the year and lowest since 2018-19.

Williams wrapped up her weekend with a career-high 11 points to go with four rebounds and two more steals in a 63-51 win over Eastern New Mexico as the Greyhounds were held to a 36.7% clip from the floor, including an 0-for-8 mark from three-point range. On the weekend, TAMUK held its opponents to 46.5 points per game, the lowest of any LSC school during the first week of league play.

Williams' honor is the first of her young career for the Blue and Gold and first for the Javelinas in the 2021-22 season. The last Javelina to receive either citation from the conference was senior Anastacia Mickens (Beaumont, Texas) on December 14, 2020, when she was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Week.

Mickens also guided TAMUK to a 2-0 start in league play with back-to-back wins over UAFS to begin the truncated season. She averaged nine points and seven rebounds across the two contests, totaled five steals, and led a defense that held the Lions to a 36.8% shooting rate from the floor in the first contest and a 33.3% clip in the second.

The Javelinas return to action later this week as they continue the Lone Star Conference schedule with contests against Texas A&M International and Western New Mexico.
