KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville football program hosted No. RV/24 A&M-Commerce for the annual Chennault Cup matchup between the teams as part of the Family Fiesta Weekend on campus sponsored by Radiology Associates.
The Javelinas (2-2, 1-1 LSC) fell behind early to the Lions (2-2, 1-1 LSC) and couldn't make headway into the deficit throughout the game en route to the loss.
The Lions wasted little time cracking the egg on the scoreboard as Antonio Leali'ie'e broke off a 73-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage for a 7-0 lead. The visitors tacked on another rushing score later in the first and added an air strike early in the second to send the hosts to a 21-0 deficit.
The Hogs posted their first points on a 22-yard boot from redshirt freshman Gilbert Garza (Weslaco, Texas) late in the second quarter for a 21-3 score heading into the locker rooms.
The first Javelina drive in the third stalled out while the Lions pushed across another score through the air with 8:34 remaining in the frame. The Hogs finally found purchase in the back of the end zone with a four-yard burst from redshirt sophomore Christian Anderson (Cypress, Texas) late in the third to trim the lead to 28-10 heading into the fourth.
A&M-C posted another score midway through the final frame as the Javelinas suffered their second loss of the 2021 campaign, 35-10
TAMUK takes a break from the schedule this upcoming weekend and returns to action on Saturday, October 9, with an LSC road contest against No. 15/16 Midwestern State.
