SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Junior Emily Witt (Rose Hill, Kan.) churned out 42 assists and 24 digs to lead all players and the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team completed its first ever perfect regular season at 12-0 by defeating the St. Mary's Rattlers, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 25-20 on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
"Ayanna [Jackson] and Kailey [Estrada] both did a great job attacking out of the middle tonight," said coach Tanya Allen, "and that really opened up our offense. I'm so proud of these young women. 12-0 is an incredible accomplishment."
Witt completes a regular season in which she logged a double-double in every match she played in and her 24 digs were a new season-high. Sophomore Kelsi Luckenbach (Calallen, Texas) led all players with 14 kills and freshman Ayanna Jackson (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas) both tallied 12 smashes while each hitting over .400. Junior Nicole Murff (San Antonio, Texas) contributed 19 digs, with senior Roxanne Morris (Goliad, Texas) adding 15 scoops and sophomore Jordan Schenkel (San Antonio, Texas) putting up 11.
The lead changed hands several times in the first set, including at a point late in the frame in which TAMUK used a Luckenbach kill and an StMU attack error to move in front 23-22. The Rattlers, however, took advantage of three straight smashes by Mia Martinez to move back ahead and win the set.
The Javelinas rebounded in the next game, sparked by a run of five straight points that included two rejections from Estrada and sophomore Tammy Jo Grohman (San Antonio, Texas) to jump ahead, 14-9. After the Rattlers sliced that lead to one, 10 of the next 12 points went to the Blue and Gold, capped by another 5-0 burst. Two rallies later, a rocket from Jackson put the match back on even terms.
A 7-2 run in the third set gave the home team a 19-16 edge and put them in position to regain control of the match before the Javelinas mounted a comeback. TAMUK started by winning four of the next five points to tie the frame at 20. After StMU moved back ahead by one, the next five rallies were taken by the Javs, the last of which ended on an attack error by Martinez and put the visitors one set away from another victory.
In the final frame, the Javelinas never trailed, winning the first three points and later stringing together four-in-a-row to boost their advantage to 16-10. The Rattlers got as close as three points multiple times, the last instance being at 23-20, but an Estrada kill and an StMU ball handling error iced the match and clinched TAMUK's perfect regular season.
The Javelinas now must wait to find out who their opponent will be in the Lone Star Conference Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on March 23rd.
