LAWTON, Okla. – Freshman Kayla Gonzales (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Anastasia Leibas (Del Valle, Texas) both homered twice and helped lead the No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Cameron Aggies by scores of 2-1 and 11-7 in Lone Star Conference action on Friday afternoon at McMahon Field in Lawton, Okla.
"I thought our approach at the plate was really good all day long," said coach Craig Nicholson. "The top of our order was great in game two and we really battled offensively. Saidi [Castillo] was really good in game one and our freshman battled and got outs in big spots in the second game."
The Javelinas are now 6-0 in LSC play for the first time since 1997 and they are 11-1 overall, which is the best in the conference. Cameron is 2-4 in the league and 9-7 overall.
GAME ONE
Sophomore Saidi Castillo (Kingsville, Texas) spent the first three innings trading zeroes with CU's Breley Webb. TAMUK's right-hander allowed only one hit while recording the first nine outs, while Webb escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the third to maintain a scoreless tie.
In the fourth, junior Jennifer Giesey (Crystal Lake, Ill.) broke the ice by slugging a solo homer center field, her first as a Javelina. Cameron responded by nearly taking the lead in the fourth, when, with a runner on, Webb laced a pitch into deep left, but junior Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas) got a glove on the ball to prevent it from becoming a two-run homer. While Webb's double did drive in a run, the game remained tied after four frames.
The hit that gave TAMUK the lead for good came from Leibas in the sixth, when she drilled her fourth dinger of the year over the wall in left to make the score 2-1. The Aggies put runners in scoring position in each of the last two frames, but Castillo worked out of each jam to pick up her fifth victory.
GAME TWO
In sharp contrast to game one, it was the offenses who quickly put their stamp on the second contest, starting with RBI singles from Gonzales and freshman Natalie Rodriguez (Edinburg, Texas) and a sacrifice fly courtesy of sophomore Matisen Onofrei (Mesa, Ariz.) that gave the Javelinas three runs in the first inning. Before TAMUK could even get an out in the bottom of the frame, a double, a single and a three-run homer from Khmari Edwards evened the score.
Gonzales propelled the Javs back into the lead with a solo bomb in the third, but once again, Cameron had an answer in the bottom of the stanza. Two walks sandwiched around an error loaded the bases with one out for Webb, who slapped a go-ahead, two-run single through the right side.
In the fourth, the Javelinas cobbled together a two-out rally with three straight singles, followed by a bases-loaded walk to Rodriguez that leveled the score at four. Onofrei followed with a grounder through the middle that plated a pair to put the visitors back in the lead.
Cameron moved to within 7-6 thanks to a TAMUK error in the fourth, but Gonzales and Leibas provided an answer one inning later. With two runners on, Gonzales hit a shot that cleared the center field fence for her second long ball of the day and Leibas immediately followed with a homer of her own that upped her team's edge to 11-6.
The job of holding that lead fell to freshman Lizette Del Angel (Robstown, Texas), who stranded runners in scoring position in the fourth and fifth and limited an Aggie rally to one run in the sixth. In the seventh, Cameron put two more runners on, but Del Angel induced a ground out to retire the game's final batter.
Another doubleheader is on the docket for TAMUK on Sunday, when they'll be in Oklahoma City, Okla., to take on the No. 10 Oklahoma Christian Eagles at 12 p.m. Stay current with Javelina softball by following @TAMUKSB and @JavelinaSports on both Twitter and Instagram, liking the Javelina Sports Facebook page, subscribing to the Javelina Athletics YouTube Channel and visiting Javelinaathletics.com.
