Javelinas drop season opener to Islanders

TAMUK on a 10-day hiatus before a return to the court on February 13 against Southwestern

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program opened its 2021 spring slate on Wednesday with a matchup against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Javelina Tennis Courts, but suffered a 7-0 setback to the crosstown opponent to close out the week.

"I love the way my team competed today," said head coach Autumn Wollenzien. "They fought with heart and passion.

"That's what we want to see, especially this early in the season."

The Javelinas (0-1) were close to taking a few points from the Islanders (8-0) but ultimately ended up on the backend of the decision.

TAMUCC moved to secure the doubles point early in the match. The second doubles flight went in favor of the visitors at 6-0 before the third doubles flight became the deciding factor at 6-1. Junior Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and sophomore Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) put up a fight in the first singles flight against Mariya Shumeika and Camille Townsend, but the Islander pair ended up on top at 6-4 against the Javelina duo.

The singles flight saw the Islanders take the sixth, second and fifth pairings to clinch the match. Freshman Milou ter Morsche (Goor, Netherlands) took on Leopoldine Boisseau in the fifth matchup and was battling back in the second set before falling at 6-2, 6-3.

Fellow newcomer Alessa Maier (Hechingen, Germany) took on the top flight against Townsend but fell in consecutive sets at 6-3, 6-1. Donkor squared up with Emma Honore in the third flight as the fifth singles matchup to finish but dropped the decision at 6-2, 6-3.

Freshman Raina Zaffar (Guwahati, India) was the Javelina who came the closest to taking a point against Emma Aucagne in the fourth pairing, but the Islander ended up with the seventh team point at 6-4, 6-4.

The Javelinas return to action in 10 days' time as they face Southwestern on February 13 in Georgetown, Texas, with first serve set for 12 p.m. CT.
