KINGSVILLE, Texas – Sophomore Jackie Alanis (McAllen, Texas) collected 16 kills and junior Emily Witt (Rose Hill, Kan.) distributed a season-high 45 assists as the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team fought their way to a 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-14 victory over the Dallas Baptist Patriots in Lone Star Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.
The Javelinas are now 5-0 at home in the fall, 5-2 in the LSC and 10-2 overall. For DBU, this loss snaps a six-match win streak and puts them at 6-2 in the conference and 8-2 overall.
Alanis' 16 smashes led all players and she hit .343 on 35 attacks while contributing nine digs as well. Freshman Ayanna Jackson (San Antonio, Texas) added 12 kills and sophomore Tammy Jo Grohman (San Antonio, Texas) finished with nine while leading all players with a .389 hitting percentage.
Witt's 45 helpers bested her previous high for the year by two, while her five total blocks matched her career high as a Javelina. Another match-high belonged to junior Nicole Murff (San Antonio, Texas) for her 22 digs.
DBU gained control of the first set early, moving out to a five-point lead at 12-7, but the Javelinas slowly chipped away before an ace by Alanis evened things at 20. The teams forged another tie at 21, but the Patriots then won three-in-a-row to reach set point and closed out the frame on a smash by Audrey Nunes.
The Javelinas drew level by taking a second set in which they never trailed. TAMUK broke a 5-5 tie by snatching seven of the next nine rallies, including one period of four straight kills by Alanis and later extended their lead to as many as eight at 24-16. The Patriots managed to shave their deficit to four, but another Alanis fireball ended the comeback attempt and evened the match at one set apiece.
The early momentum in the third frame belonged to DBU, as they established an 8-2 advantage, but the Javelinas quickly erased that lead. Two aces from senior Alexa Ruiz (Schertz, Texas) and two blocks by Witt and Jackson helped fuel a 7-0 run, and, after the teams fought to a 13-13 tie, the Javs rattled off another six-in-a-row to make the score 19-13. The home team never led by fewer than four after that and when DBU's Sofia Black committed an attack error moments later, the Javelinas were one set from a win.
Once again, the Javelinas never trailed in the fourth, taking the first two points and later upping that lead to three before the Patriots managed to draw even at 10. After an exchange of scores that made it Javelinas 13, Patriots 12, TAMUK took off on the run that sealed the match. They started by notching five-in-a-row, then soon after collected four straight points on a 9-1 burst. A few rallies later, an attack error by the visitors put the Javelinas in the win column again.
The Javelinas will make the long trip to Salt Lake City, Utah on Wednesday to face the Westminster Griffins at 5 p.m. Stay up-to-date with everything related to Javelina volleyball all season long by following @Javelina_VB and @JavelinaSports on Twitter, @JavelinaVB and @JavelinaSports on Instagram, liking TAMUK Volleyball on Facebook, subscribing to the Javelina Athletics YouTube Channel and visiting Javelinaathletics.com.
