Javs drop decision to Lady Chaps

TAMUK returns to the SPEC on Friday to face Texas Woman’s

LUBBOCK, Texas – Sophomore Tammy Jo Grohman (San Antonio, Texas) totaled nine kills against just one error for a .421 attack percentage and junior Nicole Murff (San Antonio, Texas) scooped up 25 digs, but the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team fell to the Lubbock Christian Lady Chaps, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19, on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Back-to-back losses now have the Javelinas at 8-2 for the season and 3-2 in LSC play, while LCU ups their record to 6-0 in the league and 10-4 overall.

"In general, we made too many unforced errors today," said coach Tanya Allen, "and that made it difficult for us to keep the score close. We did some good things, but we just couldn't maintain it for long stretches. Nicole did a phenomenal job digging the ball and I thought Tammy did a good job attacking on the right."

Sophomore Jackie Alanis (McAllen, Texas) led all players with 12 kills while junior Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas) finished with 10. Junior Emily Witt (Rose Hill, Kan.) rang up a match-high 34 assists with 11 digs and Murff topped the match leaderboard with 25 scoops.

The match's early momentum belonged to the Lady Chaps, who won seven of the first eight points, and the Javelinas could never dig out of that hole. LCU would hold the Javs to a -.071 hitting percentage in the first set before a block by Sage Chain and Jenna Lyons logged the final point of the game.

The Javelinas and the Lady Chaps traded points to get the second frame started until the score was tied at 9-9, but LCU won six of the next seven rallies to establish a 15-10 edge. The Javs soon went on a 6-2 run of their own, helped by two Grohman kills, slicing their deficit to one, but the Lady Chaps responded with four straight scores and put their lead at 2-0 following a TAMUK attack error.

LCU captured the first four points of the third set and never looked back, hitting .400 in the stanza with just one error on 35 attacks. TAMUK was never able to reduce the deficit to less than two and back-to-back Chain kills provided the Lady Chaps with the final points of the afternoon.
