KINGSVILLE, Texas – Junior Will Chayer (Coprus Christi, Texas) and sophomore Jake Majors (Corpus Christi, Texas) both set career-highs in points and the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team cruised to its ninth straight win, a 77-63 triumph over the Cameron Aggies in Lone Star Conference action on Saturday evening at the Steinke Physical Education Center in Kingsville, Texas.
This victory puts the Javelinas' win streak at nine straight, their longest since the 1995-96 season, and the team's record stands at 11-1. Cameron falls to 1-10.
Chayer bested his previous career-high by two, posted 21 points and also snatching a game high nine rebounds. His line included a perfect 11-of-11 on free throws. Majors added 16 of his own and hit 4-for-7 on three-pointers. Juniors Jordan Wilson (Blytheville, Ark.) and Creighton Avery (Corpus Christi, Texas) reached double figures in scoring as well, Wilson tallying 12 and Avery finishing with 10.
The game's early momentum belonged to the Hogs, who built a 16-5 lead on the strength of two Majors triples and a three-point play from sophomore Wellington Stovall (Houston, Texas).
The response from the Aggies was a 15-2 run that thrust them into a two-point lead at 20-18. The lead changed hands seven times over the next several minutes before a Tre Flowers (Bryant, Texas) trey and two Tyrese Patterson (Harlem, N.Y.) foul shots put the Javs up by five and they led by three, 32-29, when the teams reached halftime.
The Javelinas quickly killed any momentum the Aggies tried to take into the second half by tossing in 12 straight points to start the period, five of which came from Flowers. After Cameron scored the next four-in-a-row, TAMUK responded with a 7-0 spurt capped by a Majors three for a 51-33 advantage and the Hogs would later use an 11-2 run to stretch their lead to 25. A few late buckets by the visitors sliced their deficit to 12, but the Javelinas held on for consecutive win No. 9.
The Javelinas will now turn their attention to Thursday, when they'll be in Austin, Texas to take on the St. Edward's Hilltoppers at 7 p.m. Fans can keep up with Javelina men's basketball throughout the season by following @JavelinaMBB on Twitter and Instagram, liking Texas A&M University-Kingsville Men's Basketball on Facebook, subscribing to the Javelina Athletics YouTube channel and visiting Javelinaathletics.com.
