Hogs take two from Aggies

Javelinas post 20 runs in game one; complete sweep with 8-4 win in game two

LAWTON, Okla. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program took the inclement weather in stride on Sunday at McCord Field as they came away with both halves of the doubleheader against Cameron for the second week of the Lone Star Conference schedule.

"I really liked the way we pitched today in both games," said head coach Jason Gonzales. "Every pitcher dominated the zone today and our hitters continuously put pressure on them all day. It was good to get two wins in very tough weather."

The Javelinas (5-0, 5-0 LSC) came away with game one behind a thorough performance at the plate for a 20-1 score, and claimed game two over the Aggies (0-5, 0-5 LSC) at 8-4 behind solid pitching out of the bullpen to take their second series in as many weeks.

GAME ONE

The front end of the doubleheader showcased a hitting clinic from the Hogs as they scored 20 runs on 13 hits in the contest. It was the first time TAMUK crossed the 20-run threshold since May 11, 2018, when they fell 21-20 to second-seeded Tarleton at the Lone Star Conference Tournament in Canyon, Texas.

The visitors crossed home in each of the first four innings, with the first three coming on a moon shot to left from junior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) in the opening frame for the early cushion.

An Aggie miscue in the top of the second allowed the second run to score as redshirt senior Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) came home on the error from Dillon Turney for a 4-0 lead.

TAMUK turned up the heat in the third after a fielder's choice groundball from senior Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas) sparked a seven-run rally as he plated classmate Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) for the RBI. Ullman followed up with a bases-loaded double to the left-center gap later in the stanza to cap two more runs in the form of Melcher and sophomore Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas), while a sacrifice fly from senior Aldo Buendia (Laredo, Texas) brought freshman Damian Rodriguez (McAllen, Texas) home in the following at-bat.

Ullman ended up scoring the next run on a double steal with redshirt senior Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas), who reached third on the played following the errant throw down to second and came home on a double down the left-field line from redshirt sophomore Matthew Stary (Houston, Texas).

Stary ended up capping the rally when he scored on another CU error resulting from Spinn's at-bat to set the score at 11-0 going into the bottom half of the inning.

Cameron got one run back in the home half of the third after Jayce Clem skied a fly ball to center that brought in Beau Williams, but it was the only run permitted by junior John Mike Rodriguez (Corpus Christi, Texas) as the transfer from Cisco College threw six innings on the bump and struck out six before handing the reins over to classmate Tyler Henson (Abilene, Texas) in the seventh. Henson threw a scoreless inning to secure the win for the visitors as John Mike Rodriguez was given his first decision in the Blue and Gold.

Eight more runs came across in the top of the fourth with the rally starting on a two-run shot to right from Melcher, his first of the season. De Leon added a two-run liner to right later in the at-bat, while Spinn bounced a single through the right half of the diamond for a 16-1 cushion.

Stary scored the next run for the Hogs off a wild pitch before Spinn came home on a sacrifice fly to center from Servin, while the last run of the rally came courtesy of a single dropped into right from Damian Rodriguez that set the score at 19-1 going into the bottom of the fourth.

The game's final run was a result of Spinn's team-leading fourth hit of the day as he roped a double to center to score redshirt sophomore Rey Chapa (The Woodlands, Texas). He ended up with two RBI and three runs scored, while Servin led the team with four RBI on his two hits.

De Leon and Ullman both added two hits and two RBI to their totals, with Melcher adding three RBI.

GAME TWO

The back end of Sunday's twofer saw TAMUK jump out to another early lead as redshirt junior Will Arnold (Magnolia, Texas) lined a double to center to score Servin and De Leon in the top of the first. CU got a run back in the bottom half of the frame after Beau Williams pushed a grounder to Servin over at first that allowed Izrael Trevino to score.

The Hogs go two more runs in the top of the second to pad their lead, the first coming on a sacrifice fly to right from De Leon that scored redshirt junior Hayden Fails (Sweeny, Texas), while another double steal, this time from Spinn at first and Ullman at third, brought in the second.

The Aggies tied the game in the fourth by taking advantage of a Javelina miscue when Cooper Edwards reached on a dropped third strike that allowed Dillon Turney to score. Jordan Harrison evened the count at 4-4 later in the frame by dropping a single into center to bring in Edwards and Ryan Carter, but the Hogs put a stop to the rally on the relay from Spinn to Buendia to get Harrison trying to stretch the hit into a double.

Arnold put the Javelinas back on top in the top of the fifth as his single into right brought in Servin. Servin mirrored his classmate with a single of his own into right in the top of the seventh to score De Leon. A sacrifice fly to right from Melcher followed by a single to center from Damian Rodriguez in the ninth set the line score at 8-4 before sophomore Matthew Sesler (Harlingen, Texas) threw a scoreless ninth to secure his first save of the season.

Sesler hurled the last 2.2 innings of the game with six strikeouts to claim the save. He relieved classmate Bryce Galvan (Blessing, Texas) who took over in the fifth for redshirt junior Amado Almanzar (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) Galvan took his second win with three strikeouts over 2.1 innings on the hill, while Almanzar struck out nine in his four innings of work for the no decision.

Arnold and Fails both finished with two hits in the second game as Arnold drove in three runs. De Leon and Servin both tabbed one hit, one RBI and two runs to complete their evening of work.

Game three has been moved up to an 11 a.m. CT first pitch on Monday, February 10, at McCord Field.
