Javelinas drop game three to the Aggies

Lunsford strikes out six in six innings to take the no-decision

LAWTON, Okla. - A slim lead was erased late in the game on a cold and windy Monday at McCord Field for the Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program as Cameron made a late push in the Lone Star Conference matchup and came away with the decision at 7-3.

"Disappointing day when you have an opportunity to sweep and only needing nine outs," said head coach Jason Gonzales. "Overall, we're pleased to be able to take the series win in some unfavorable weather conditions, but we have to learn how to finish somebody when we have them down.

"We now have a short week of work and have to get ready for a very good Lubbock Christian team this weekend."

The Javelinas (5-1, 5-1 LSC) held a 2-1 over the Aggies (1-5, 1-5 LSC) going into the bottom of the seventh before the hosts connected for five runs in the at-bat to take the win at 7-3.

Senior Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) put the visitors on the board first in the top of the fifth as his liner into right brought home freshman Damian Rodriguez (McAllen, Texas) for a 1-0 lead. A failed double steal in the top of the next frame doubled up the cushion as redshirt junior Hayden Fails (Sweeny, Texas) drew the throw down to second that allowed junior Reid Baty (Laramie, Wyo.) to cross for a 2-0 line score going into the bottom half of the frame.

The hosts put up one run in the home half of the sixth as Beau Williams pushed a solo shot out to right. Most of the damage done came in the bottom of the seventh, however, the first of three wild pitches flipping the script as Erik Ohman struck out in his at-bat but reached first safely as the ball skipped away.

Ohman ended up at second on another errant toss from the mound to the plate and eventually scored on a single to left from Preston Allerheiligen. Allerheiligen came home later in the frame on a liner to center from Izrael Trevino before the bases were loaded on a walk issued to Williams.

A walk, single and groundball to second led to the score showing 6-2 in favor of the Aggies on the board before a timely pitching change squelched the rally.

CU tacked on one more in the eight on another wild pitch, scoring Ohman once again. The Hogs had a favorable look at the plate in the top of the ninth with bases loaded and one out, but a fielder's choice ground ball from senior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) traded a run for an out while a ground ball to the shortstop from junior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) dashed any hopes of a comeback.

Junior Kolby Lunsford (Helotes, Texas) got the start on the hill for TAMUK and went six innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts. He was the beneficiary of a runner thrown out at the plate in the bottom of the first as Williams was tagged out on the relay from Fails to classmate Will Arnold (Magnolia, Texas), and allowed only one other Aggie beyond second base. Lunsford was credited with the no-decision as redshirt junior Matthew Oleson (Driftwood, Texas) suffered the loss.

The Hogs had to contend with Kalen Haynes to start the game and had bases loaded with two outs in the opening frame before he sat down Arnold on strikes. TAMUK again loaded the bases in the top of the fifth with one out but Haynes wriggled out of the jam with only one run allowed as he got a popup from Servin and a groundout from senior Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas).

Ullman was the lone member of the Blue and Gold to compile two hits on the day, doing so in five at-bats, while De Leon and Arnold gathered the other two.

The Javelinas are back at home this week as they begin the four-game stretch of their schedule with a Lone Star Conference matchup against Lubbock Christian starting at 6 p.m. CT on Friday, February 14, at Nolan Ryan Field.
