CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's tennis program faced their second Division I foe of the week with a matchup against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi today at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center, but couldn't find the magic that carried them to a win earlier in the week as they fell by a count of 7-0 in the dual match.
"The score doesn't reflect the effort and how well we played today," said head coach
Autumn Wollenzien. "I'm proud of our performance and we will continue to improve."
The Javelinas (1-1) dropped all three doubles matchups before the Islanders (9-1) pulled off the clean sweep in single play. The third pairing of senior
Valerie Ruiz (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman
Franka Sindicic (Zagreb, Croatia) came the closest to upsetting their foe as they dropped the matchup to Carolina Bulatovic and Jordan Ortega-Mendez at 6-4.
The top pairing saw senior
Victoria Romanovskaia (Simferopol, Crimea, Russia) and sophomore
Maya Donkor (McLean, Va.) fall 6-2 to Mariya Shumeika and Camille Townsend. Meanwhile, the second tandem of senior
Stephanie Baerman (San Antonio, Texas) and junior
Laura Montalvo (Cochabamba, Bolivia) took on Kei Kato and Emma Honore but ended up on the backside of a 6-1 score.
Ruiz put up a battle in the singles portion, as she was the lone Javelina to take a point in the 2019 version of the matchup at the Javelina Tennis Courts, as she took on Honore in the fourth matchup. Ruiz was narrowly edged out in the first set, 7-5, and just missed out on a decisive third as Honore took the second at 6-4.
Romanovskaia took on Shumeika in the top matchup with the Islander claiming a 6-1, 6-1 two-set victory. Montalvo squared off with Townsend in the second pairing but fell in consecutive sets at 6-1, 6-0.
Donkor was tabbed with the matchup against Kato in the third flight but fell in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Freshman
Daniela Koleva (Kocani, North Macedonia) was pitted against Victoire Delattre in the fifth pairing but lost out in two sets, 6-0 and 6-2. The final matchup came down to Baermanand Maria Maldonado with the first set going in favor of the Islander at 6-4 before the second went the same way at 6-0.
The Javelinas will face their third, and final, Division I foe of the season in two weeks' time as they visit Edinburg, Texas, to take on UTRGV on February 22.
