Hogs fall in Sunday Finale to Buffs

Bonuz rips inside-the-park home run for second round tripper of 2020

CANYON, Texas – The No. 22 Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program fell in the Sunday finale of the four-game set against West Texas A&M at Wilder Park by a score of 14-3 in Lone Star Conference action.

The Javelinas (9-5, 9-5 LSC) held an early lead before the Buffs (12-2, 12-2 LSC) tallied all 14 of their runs in three innings to take the decision.

Junior Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) opened the scoring with an RBI double to left center that scored senior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) in the top of the first. Sophomore Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) pushed the lead to three as he roped a liner into left and raced around the bases for a two-run, inside-the-park home run that brought in Spinn once again in the top of the third.

WT took back the lead in the bottom of the frame after Izaiah Madrid started a four-run rally with an RBI liner into right center. Keone Givens evened the count at three apiece later in the at-bat with a two-run shot to left center, while Darius Carter put the hosts ahead with a sacrifice fly out to right.

The Buffs pushed across six more in the bottom of the fourth on a rally started by Givens' double to left center, while the final four runs were tacked on in the fifth as Cade Engle drew a bases-loaded walk to begin the run.

Spinn was the lone Javelina to post multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 on the day with two runs scored. Bonuz went 1-for-2 on the day with two RBI and added a walk to his total.

Junior Kolby Lunsford (Helotes, Texas) got the start on the hill and went 3.2 innings pitched with three strikeouts. Todd Danzeisen was tabbed as the starter for WT and took his third win with eight strikeouts over six innings of work.

The Javelinas return to Nolan Ryan Field this weekend for a four-game series against St. Edward's starting on Friday, February 28.
