Javelinas outdone by Rattlers in extras

St. Mary’s takes game one in walk-off fashion in the 10th

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program suffered a 4-3 setback in extra innings on Friday at Dickson Stadium as St. Mary's walked off with the win in the 10th in the first game of the Lone Star Conference weekend series.

The Javelinas (11-8, 11-8 LSC) took over the lead twice in the contest but the Rattlers (10-9, 10-9 LSC) had the response each time and ended up with the decision in extras on an errant throw.

Senior Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) drove in all three runs for the Hogs in the game. The first two came on a double roped into left that plated sophomore Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) and redshirt junior Will Arnold (Magnolia, Texas) in the top of the fourth.

StMU got both runs back in the bottom of the first after Jake Mares got plunked with the bases loaded for the first, while Steven Wynn skied a sacrifice fly to right to push Derek Mueller home to knot the game at two apiece.

Spinn put the Javelinas ahead once again in the next at-bat with his second double of the day into left that brought Bonuz home once again. The hosts had their response ready in the bottom half of the frame when Ryan McGowen dropped down the safety squeeze bunt to get Andrew Perez home and tie the game at 3-3 heading into the seventh.

The Hogs had one chance over the next four innings to break the tie, with senior Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas) stealing second with two outs in the top of the 10th.  He ended up stranded at second, however, as Jacob Koehler got a ground ball out to end the inning and roll the scorecard over to the home half.

A leadoff double from Keaton Milford upped the ante in the bottom of the 10th despite Wynn striking out in the next at-bat. An intentional walk set up what became the final play as a high-chopped ground ball up the middle was fielded by senior Aldo Buendia (Laredo, Texas) to get the runner at second but an errant throw over to first on the double play attempt proved costly as the ball sailed wide of the mark and allowed Milford to score for the 4-3 final.

Spinn finished with his third multi-hit game of the season as he went 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Arnold was the other Hog to post multiple hits as he, too, finished with two doubles on the evening along with one run scored.

Junior Tyler Flores (San Antonio, Texas) got the start for TAMUK and struck out six while issuing only one walk before getting the hook with two outs in the fifth. Sophomore Bryce Galvan (Blessing, Texas) threw the next 2.1 innings on the hill, while classmate Matthew Sesler (Harlingen, Texas) took the decision with 2.2 innings pitched and three punchouts.

The two squads will face off in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7, at Dickson stadium with first pitch set for 1 p.m. CT.
