No. 5 Javelinas suffer first series defeat against Angelo State

TAMUK drops to second in LSC

SAN ANGELO, Texas - A six-run third inning that included a pair of home runs gave the Angelo State Rambelles the lead for good and propelled ASU past the No. 5 Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team by a score of 8-5 on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at Mayer Field in San Angelo, Texas.

This marks the first series loss of the season for the Javelinas, who are now in second place in the LSC at 18-6 in conference and 33-8 overall. The Rambelles improve to 14-13 and 28-17.

The scoring began in the second with the Rambelles getting on the board first. A double and a single brought up Logan Graham with two outs and a base hit by her tallied two runs for the game's first lead.

That lead didn't last long thanks to freshman Veronica Chavez (Tempe, Ariz.), who, one half-inning later, also came up with two on and two outs. She proceeded to send a three-run homer over the wall in left, allowing the Javelinas to leapfrog into the lead, 3-2.

Angelo State used two homers of their own to regain the advantage in the bottom of the third, but first they were able to load the bases on an error and two walks. Karina Rocha then struck the big blow for the Rambelles with a grand slam, putting ASU in front 6-3. Following an Avery Zeigler single, Graham smacked a two-run homer, upping the home team's lead to five.

In each of the final four innings, the Javelinas put runners on base, but Meagan Hill would not allow the Javs to mount a comeback. In the sixth, freshman Amber Reyes (Edinburg, Texas) brought the visitors within four, scoring on a wild pitch, and senior Victoria Schoonard-Saborio (Elk Grove, Texas) hit a solo homer to lead off the seventh. Those tallies would conclude the scoring, Hill recording the final two outs with the tying run in the on-deck circle.

The last home series for the Javelinas in 2019 begins with a doubleheader on Thursday. They'll be taking on the MSU Texas Mustangs.
