Javelinas muscle their way to doubleheader sweep of Aggies

Two victories clinch another series win for the Javs

LAWTON, Okla. – The Javelina offense went off for 17 runs and 26 hits and powered the No. 15 Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Cameron Aggies, as the Javs won by scores of 9-8 and 8-0 on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action in Lawton, Okla. at McMahon Field.

The Javelinas have now won each of their first four series in conference and their LSC record stands at 9-3 with a 22-4 overall mark. Cameron is 3-6 and 14-10 overall.

"We had a tough loss last night," said coach Craig Nicholson, "and our kids showed outstanding character to come back today and play at a high level to get two wins."

GAME ONE

The Javelinas quickly teed off on Cameron starter Bethany Hines using two singles sandwiched around an error to load the bases with one out in the opening frame. Senior Roxy Chapa's (McAllen, Texas) single plated the first tally and a subsequent groundout brought in a second run. RBI singles from senior Victoria Schoonard-Saborio (Elk Grove, Calif.) and freshman Makenzie Mays (Conroe, Texas) followed and the Javs had a 4-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Cameron threatened for the first time thanks to an error and a single and Alyssa Osterdock sent both runners home with another base hit, slicing her team's deficit in half. Three batters, later, the Aggies crept within one when Osterdock stole home as part of a double steal.

One half-inning later, Chapa, Schoonard-Saborio and Mays were at the center of another Blue and Gold rally. Chapa started the third with a double and consecutive RBI singles from Schoonard-Saborio and Mays upped the visitors' lead to 6-3. Sophomore Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas) pushed across the third run of the frame by lining a single into left to score Mays.

A Khmari Edwards homer in the third brought the Aggies to within 7-4, but Javelina pitchers Breanna Smith (San Antonio, Texas) and Saidi Castillo (13-2) (Kingsville, Texas) kept Cameron off the board in the fourth and fifth and Chapa bumped TAMUK's lead back to four with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

TAMUK's edge slipped away in the sixth, when the home team loaded the bases with one out and used a two-run single by Edwards, a double steal and a sacrifice fly to draw even at eight, but they couldn't take the lead.

The seventh inning was scoreless before the Javelinas retook the lead in the eighth. Three consecutive two-out singles, the last one coming from sophomore Anastasia Leibas (Del Valle, Texas) to score the go-ahead run. Castillo, who retired the last seven batters she faced, pitched a perfect bottom of the eight to complete the first half of the sweep.

GAME TWO

The Javelinas again used the first inning to jump in front, Kelly breaking the ice by scoring on an error after stealing second. Later in the inning, Leibas put another run on the scoreboard with a solo homer.

Chapa added a solo shot of her own, her seventh of the season, to touch off a four-run Javelina third inning. A double by Leibas and an Amber Reyes (Edinburg, Texas) single brought up Schoonard-Saborio, who skied a sacrifice fly into left. Mays then cracked a double that moved Reyes to third and a groundout and an error scored each runner, staking the Javs to a 6-0 lead after three frames.

In the circle for Nicholson was junior Victoria Carrion (3-0) (Robstown, Texas) and she ensured the Aggies couldn't respond to her team's growing lead. After a lead-off walk in the first, she retired nine of the next ten including a perfect second inning. Cameron put its first two runners on in the fourth, but Carrion used a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to keep her team's advantage at six runs.

A Mays single and a Schoonard-Saborio double started the fifth inning for the Javs and a groundout and a wild pitch sent each runner home to push the score to 8-0. Anotherr zero from Carrion in the fifth completed TAMUK's run-rule victory.

On Monday, the Javelinas will visit the Oklahoma Baptist Lady Bison for a 5 p.m. matchup at Lady Bison Park.
