LAWTON, Okla. – The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program owned the early lead on Sunday at McCord Field over Lone Star Conference foe Cameron, but couldn't maintain the momentum and suffered a 8-3 loss in the third game of the series.
The Javelinas (20-11, 4-3 LSC) got a solo shot to right from redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) but couldn't solve the Aggies' (14-18, 5-2 LSC) pitching staff as they were outran by the hosts through the final six innings.
Loredo pulled his team-leading fourth round tripper of the year over the right field wall for a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. CU, meanwhile, loaded the bases in the fourth and came away with three runs after taking advantage of a TAMUK miscue.
A bases-loaded single from Colton Adams opened the gates for Myles Miller to score, while a two-run single from Pierce Khan brought the next two runs home, both unearned.
The Aggies tacked on two more in the fifth, as a single from Briton Schiewe plated the first while a bases-loaded hit by pitch brought in the second.
Two more came across in the bottom of the seventh when Jaylan Prince bounced a single back up the middle with the bases juiced to put the Hogs in a 7-1 hole, while a double from Hayden Jaco in the bottom of the eighth provided the final run with the visitors facing a seven-run hill to climb going into the final at bat.
Momentum was on the Hogs' side for a moment as Loredo and redshirt senior
Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba) both reached safely to start the top of the ninth. A one-out double down the right field line from freshman
Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) capped Loredo, while Hernandez came home on a sacrifice fly from redshirt junior
Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) to cut the deficit to five runs.
Unfortunately the rally was stopped short as a groundout in the infield cemented the line score at 8-3.
Loredo and Hernandez both finished with two hits in the contest, with the former posting a home run and a walk to finish 2-for-3 at the plate.
Bonuz was the only other Javelina with an extra-base knock, doing so in the top of the ninth.
Senior
Joshua Valdez (Kyle, Texas) suffered his second loss for TAMUK as he got the hook after three innings of work.
The Hogs will look to salvage the series split on Monday, April 1, with first pitch set for 1 p.m. CT at McCord Field.
