LAWTON, Okla. - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program suffered is second walk-off loss of the Lone Star Conference matchup to Cameron on Monday at McCord Field, as a pinch-hit single from Nate Pecota in the bottom of the 12th put the visitors on the backend of a 5-4 decision.
The Javelinas (20-12, 4-4 LSC) and the Aggies (15-18, 6-2 LSC) combined for nine errors in the contest, but it was the hosts who eventually won out to clinch the series at three games to one.
TAMUK struck first in the top of the fourth after redshirt senior
Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba) ripped a double into right to bring sophomore
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) home. CU had the response in the bottom half of the frame after Colton Adams skied a sacrifice fly to center to cap Myles Miller, while a passed ball allowed Hayden Jaco to score later in the at bat for a 2-1 lead favoring Cameron.
The Aggies tacked on another in the bottom of the fifth after Jaco reached on a Javelina miscue that gave Izrael Trevino room the score, while Adams skied a towering fly ball to center in the bottom of the sixth and ended up at home on another error to put the visitors in a 4-1 deficit.
The Hogs got the runs back in the top of the eighth after redshirt freshman
Rey Chapa (The Woodlands, Texas) scored on a misplay from junior
Austin De Leon's (Frisco, Texas) batted ball in to center to start the rally.
De Leon later came home on an RBI groundout from Servin, while redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) reached on a single and scored on a triple from junior
Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas) to even the count at 4-4 going into the ninth.
Senior
Eric Sandoz (Austin, Texas) bore the brunt of the work on the mound as he took over for sophomore
Tyler Flores (San Antonio, Texas) in the fourth and threw a scoreless ninth to put the contest in extras.
Sandoz kept CU off the board for the 10th and 11th innings before giving way to senior
Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) to start the 12th. Plovanich summarily sat down his batter on strikes before classmate
Garrett Alexander (Spring, Texas) took over.
Alexander quickly found himself in trouble after retiring the first batter he faced as the Aggies drew a pair of walks to put runners at first and second with two outs.
A pitching change wasn't enough to stop the momentum as CU took the contest after Pecota bounced a base hit back up the middle to plate Miller for a 5-4 final.
Sandoz went eight innings in relief with six strikeouts, while Loredo, Melcher and Hernandez were the only Hogs who managed to record a hit in the contest.
The Javelinas will return home this week to host Tarleton for a four-game conference series starting on Friday, April 5, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. CT.
