LAWTON, Okla. - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball program putting a hitting showcase in the frontend of Friday's doubleheader against Cameron for a commanding win, but suffered a defeat on the backend on a walk-off home run to take a split to open the Lone Star Conference series.
The Javelinas (20-10, 4-2 LSC) spread the wealth around in the first game with all but one starter coming away with a hit, while the Aggies (13-18, 4-2 LSC) used a pair of jacks from Izrael Trevino in the second game to close the twin bill.
GAME ONE
The Hogs jumped on the hosts early in the first contest, with an RBI liner from redshirt senior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) bringing in junior
Seth Spinn (Holland, Texas) for the first run of the contests in the top of the first.
Spinn reached safely on a bounding-ball single through the right half of the diamond to extend his active hitting streak to 17 games.
Loredo came home later in the frame when junior
Cameron Melcher (Kerrville, Texas) ripped a double down the left field line for a 2-0 TAMUK lead going into the bottom half of the frame.
CU got a run back following a leadoff home run from Jaylan Prince, but it made little difference in the contest as redshirt senior
Alex Gonzalez (Corpus Christi, Texas) responded with a solo shot of his own in the top of the second, his first round tripper of the season.
TAMUK proceeded to load the bases in the stanza and Loredo brought three runs home with a swing of his bat after he dropped a double into the right center gap to clear the bases, and eventually came home on an RBI groundout from classmate
Pablo Hernandez (Havana, Cuba) for a 7-1 lead going into the third.
Senior
Preston Plovanich (Santa Fe, Texas) settled into a rhythm and kept the Aggies scoreless in five of the final six frames to come away with his fourth win of the year behind his first complete game, adding eight strikeouts in the process.
Meanwhile, the visitors padded the lead with six runs in the third, the first of which came across on a CU miscue after Gonzalez reached on a throwing error by the third baseman that allowed redshirt junior
Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) to score.
A bases-loaded balk committed by the Aggies brought the second run home as Gonzalez ended up back home, while a two-run single from sophomore
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) officially set the cushion at 10 runs in the contest.
A fielder's choice ground ball from Hernandez allowed Servin to score later in the at bat, while a liner to right from freshman
Steven Bonuz (Port Lavaca, Texas) set the line score at 13-1 going into the bottom of the third.
CU added another run in the bottom half after Pierce Khan dropped a single to left that plated Erik Ohman, while a two-run double from junior
Austin De Leon (Frisco, Texas) in the top of the fifth brought the scoring to a close.
Plovanich cruised through the final four innings on the hill as he allowed only two batters to reach safely en route to the 15-2 final.
The Hogs compiled 19 hits as a team on the front end of the doubleheader, as De Leon, Spinn and Loredo each came away with three. De Leon tacked on two RBI and two runs, Spinn scored thrice and Loredo tallied four RBI in addition to a pair of runs scored to lead the way.
Servin, Bonuz and Gonzalez all had two hits with Gonzalez providing the lone long ball.
GAME TWO
TAMUK was kept off the board through the first four innings before getting three runs in the fifth behind a trio of CU errors. A failed pickoff attempt allowed two runs to score before a miscue by the left fielder allowed a third run to come home to tie the game.
Prince put the hosts on the board first in the bottom of the third as he went back-to-back with Briton Schiewe on consecutive doubles for the first run.
Prince later scored on a liner into right from Dillon Turney, while a single from Trevino brought home the third run.
The 3-3 count held firm until Trevino's homer in the sixth, but De Leon kept the Hogs' hopes alive with a solo shot of his own in the top of the seventh before Trevino one-upped him in the bottom half of the frame with a two-run jack.
Spinn's hitting streak officially came to an end in the second contest, but he kept another streak alive as his walk in the fifth allowed him to reach base safely for the 18th consecutive game.
Hernandez was the lone Javelina to post multiple his as he came away with a pair of singles, while De Leon had the lone extra-base hit on the round tripper.
Junior
Zach Boyett (Robinson, Texas) took the no-decision after going five innings on the hill with eight punchouts to zero walks, while redshirt senior
Garrett Alexander (Spring, Texas) took the loss with one and 2/3 innings pitched.
Game three of the series is set for Saturday, March 30, with first pitch of the nine-inning affair slated for 1 p.m. CT.
