KINGSVILLE, Texas – Sophomore Anastasia Leibas (Del Valle, Texas) logged three hits, including her third homer in three games, and drove in four runs and the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team completed a three-game sweep of the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds with a 9-1 triumph on Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference action at Hubert Field in Kingsville, Texas.
"We were a lot better offensively right from the get-go today," said coach Craig Nicholson. "I felt like our at-bats early in the game were really good and we continued that way. That's what this team is capable of."
The Javelinas have now won six straight and maintain their place atop the LSC standings at 11-3 in league play and 26-4 overall. ENMU has dropped nine-in-a-row and own records of 6-12 and 10-16.
"There's a long way to go," said Nicholson. "Obviously next weekend is a huge series in terms of what is going to happen at the end, but, for this group, we're just focused on the next game and right now, that's West Texas on Friday."
A lead-off walk to sophomore Loren Kelly (Rockport, Texas), followed by a Victoria Schoonard-Saborio (Elk Grove, Texas) single sparked a first inning rally that yielded the game's initial two runs. Kelly and Schoonard-Saborio both scored on a single provided by Leibas, staking the Javs to a quick, 2-0 lead.
After the visitors got on the board in the top of the second, the Javelinas resumed their attack in the bottom of the frame. A walk and a single brought up senior Roxy Chapa (McAllen, Texas) with one out and she blooped an RBI single into center. The next batter was Leibas and TAMUK's shortstop drove a 2-0 pitch off the right field wall, tallying two more runs to make the score 5-1.
Making her team's lead stand up was freshman Saidi Castillo (Kingsville, Texas), who improved her record to 16-2. In going the full five innings, she struck out nine and allowed only four singles with one walk. This marked the sixth time in 2019 Castillo has struck out at least nine.
A sixth run came across for the Javelinas in the third on a Loren Kelly RBI single and the Javelinas used the long ball to add two more runs in the fourth. Leibas tattooed the first pitch of the inning over the wall in left and the very next offering was rocketed to left for another solo blast by freshman Veronica Chavez (Tempe, Ariz.). Chavez also knocked in the winning run one inning later, following a hit and a walk with a single through the left side that scored freshman Yvonne Castillo (Leander, Texas) and clinched the sweep.
On Friday, the Javelinas will begin another conference series, this one against No. 6 West Texas A&M in Canyon, Texas.
