Javelinas fall to Falcons to end regular season

Barnes and Smith find the back of the end zone in loss to UTPB

ODESSA, Texas – A 14-point gap at the end of the opening quarter quickly ballooned into a 56-point deficit on Saturday at Ratliff Stadium as the Texas A&M-Kingsville football program fell 70-14 to UT Permian Basin to close the regular season.

The Javelinas (2-9, 1-7 LSC) had some momentum at the start of the second stanza after senior Koy Detmer Jr. (Somerset, Texas) found classmate Kris Barnes (Fort Worth, Texas) for 19 yards into the end zone, but the Falcons (4-7, 2-6 LSC) tacked on 28 unanswered points through the remainder of the half to cruise to the win on their Senior Day.

Ben Galaviz started the scoring for the hosts with a 34-yard reception from Kameron Mathis on their opening drive. The Hogs lost possession on the first drive of the game after Detmer Jr. was sacked and lost the handle on the ball near midfield which allowed the Falcons to convert the turnover into seven points.

A 64-yard punt down to the UTPB one-yard line after the following TAMUK drive did little to stop the momentum as Mathis capped off the eight-play, 99-yard drive with a 39-yard scamper to double up the lead at the 5:10 mark. The visitors finally found purchase near the start of the second when Detmer Jr. completed four-of-five passes on the drive that resulted in a 19-yard touchdown pass to Barnes, but the Falcons had the response two drives later with a 50-yard strike from Mathis to McBride that pushed the cushion back to two scores at 21-7.

UTPB found the end zone thrice more through the remainder of the half, first on a 52-yard pass from Mathis to Zubiate at the 6:38 mark of the frame, while Caleb Forrest added a 13-yard rushing touchdown with 32 seconds to go before the break. Any hope for the Hogs to cut into the lead was quickly dashed as John O'Kelley intercepted a pass from Detmer Jr. in the red zone and ran it back for 58 yards before handing it off to Chris Hoad for the remaining 21 yards and the score.

The 42-7 gap at the half grew at the start of the third quarter as Davion Sutton converted three rushes into 75 yards on the opening drive with the final 35-yard rush crossing the goal line. The Falcons tacked on three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to push their total to 70 as Jacob Granado posted a one-yard rush just after the start of the final period.

Rocky Barnes added a 16-yard reception from Dylan Krans for the second score, while Davion Sutton tacked on the final touchdown on a five-yard run with 6:33 remaining in the game. Redshirt junior Cade Dyal (Kerrville, Texas) added a seven-yard touchdown pass to classmate Alan Smith (Humble, Texas) near the end of the game to cement the line score at 70-14 to end the year.

Detmer Jr. finished with 165 yards on 18-for-33 through the air along with one touchdown, Barnes added 83 yards on the ground on 15 carries, and redshirt senior Devin Milburn (Galveston, Texas) led the receiving corps with six catches for 65 yards.

Redshirt junior Tre'Michael Tutt (Channelview, Texas) led the defense with nine tackles, three solo, while redshirt freshman Amos Coleman III (Houston, Texas) and junior Jacob Clarkson (Houston, Texas) each added seven.
