MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The first day of the Barry University Classic proved to be a difficult challenge for the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's volleyball team as they dropped a 3-0 decision to the Barry University Bucs on Friday evening at the Health and Sports Center in Miami Shores, Fla.
Senior Madison Brabham (Kingwood, Texas) proved to be the team's most potent offensive player with kills on 24 swings for a .292 clip while also contributing 11 assists.
Junior Sarah Miller (Long Beach, Calif.) topped the squad in digs with 12 while freshman Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas) picked up five blocks.
The match's first lead belonged to the Javelinas, who went ahead 4-0 thanks in part to kills by Brabham and Kailey Estrada (San Antonio, Texas). Barry was quick to respond, forging a 7-7 tie before taking the lead for good. A 9-2 rally would put them ahead by five and they'd hold off any TAMUK comeback attempt before taking the final four points. Tierney Ward's ace put the first set into Barry's column. The Bucs hit .333 in the set, led by Meg Buvinci's six kills on 12 attacks.
Two smashes each from Miller and Brabham helped TAMUK build a 7-3 second set edge. The Bucs reeled off six-in-a-row before three straight Javelina points slid them back in front 10-9. The Javs led 15-13, only to see Barry record the next seven points. They held that edge before an attack error provided the final point of the game.
The third frame again began with TAMUK getting a four-point head start and four of their first six kills were recorded by Brabham, but once again, the home team had a run in them. They jumped from down 8-4 to ahead 9-8. The Javs retook the lead briefly, but their opponents would win eight of the next nine rallies to make the score 17-12 on their way to a victory that was sealed by another Javelina attack error.
The second day of play at the Barry University Classic pits the Javelinas against Southern Connecticut at 10 a.m. and Bridgeport at 2 p.m. A comprehensive recap of each match will be posted Javelinaathletics.com.
