No. 16 Javelinas Take Doubleheader Split with Cameron

TAMUK drops game one, 6-2, holds on to 4-2 win in game two

LAWTON, Okla. – The No. 16 Texas A&M University-Kingsville baseball program dropped the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at McCord Field to Cameron University at 6-2, but fought back for a 4-2 win in the second game to salvage the split.

The Javelinas (18-4) were held to nine hits between the two games while junior Joshua Valdez (Kyle, Texas) posted his first save of the season in the second game after fanning a pair of Aggies (10-12) in his lone inning of work.

GAME ONE

All of the action in the first game of the twofer took place in the fifth inning as TAMUK struck first in the top half of the frame with an RBI single from redshirt-freshman Will Arnold (Magnolia, Texas) to bring in senior Travis Geiser (Portland, Texas), before redshirt-sophomore Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) pushed a squeeze bunt to the pitcher to cap Arnold later on.

The Aggies loaded the bases with nobody out during their at bat and eventually pushed six runs across to take the lead. Micah Kaaukai started the rally with a two-run single through the left side of the infield to even the count at two apiece.

Colton Adams plated another run after getting hit by a pitch while Michael Flohr added two more behind a double through the left half of the diamond.

Mitch Sloan ended the rally with a sacrifice fly to right for a 6-2 Cameron lead heading into the sixth.

The Javelinas were limited in the final two innings, held to only one baserunner in both the sixth and seventh inning before the Aggies took the first game at 6-2.

GAME TWO

The Hogs wasted little time getting on the board on the backend of the doubleheader as senior Dallas Stefano (Cypress, Texas) sent a leadoff jack in the top of the second to put the visitors up early.

The Aggies responded in the bottom of the third after Cole Williams roped a double into right center to plate a pair and put the Javelinas in a 2-1 hole.

Ullman evened the score at 2-2 following his sacrifice fly to center field to bring in sophomore Brad Jones (Crandall, Texas) before getting a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh following an Aggie miscue.

Jones reached on an error by the second baseman to put the Javelinas ahead, and he eventually came home on a liner to center field from Ullman later in the stanza for a 4-2 lead.

Valdez took over in the top of the seventh for redshirt-senior Lee May Gonzalez (Corpus Christi, Texas) (4-1) who took his fourth win of the year after scattering five hits over six innings of work to go with five strikeouts. Valdez struck out two Aggies before getting a lineout from Williams to end the game.

The final game of the non-conference series is set for Sunday, March 18, with first pitch of the nine-inning affair scheduled for 1 p.m. CT.
