LAWTON, Okla. – The No. 16 Texas A&M University-Kingsville baseball program was locked in a close contest against Cameron on Sunday at McCord Field, but posted four runs in the final inning to pull away with the series behind an 8-2 final in game four.
The Javelinas (19-4) have won three consecutive series before the start of Lone Star play following the game four final over the Aggies (10-13).
Senior
Levi Zents (Fort Worth, Texas) was the spearhead for the offense as he was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate with a pair of triples and three RBI in the win. Zents put the Hogs up early after his sacrifice fly in the first inning gave the visitors a 1-0 lead as redshirt-sophomore
Kohl Ullman (Houston, Texas) crossed the plate.
Cameron evened the count at one apiece following an RBI double from Micah Kaaukai in the bottom of the fourth to cap Cole Williams, but senior hurler
Kyle Craft (Victoria, Texas) settled in and sat the next two Aggies down to end the stanza.
Craft improved to 4-0 on the year after he scattered six hits and two runs over seven innings of work while striking out five.
The Javelinas retook the lead in the top of the fifth after Zents roped his second triple of the day down the right field line to plate Ullman and redshirt-junior
Alex Gonzalez (Corpus Christi, Texas), before Gonzalez reached on an error in the following inning that allowed freshman
Giancarlo Servin (Edinburg, Texas) to score for a 4-1 lead over CU.
The Aggies cut TAMUK's lead to two runs in the bottom of the seventh after Nik Sanchez led the inning off with a solo shot to left, but Craft worked through the inning with back-to-back groundouts before closing his day with his fifth punchout.
Freshman
Tyler Flores (San Antonio, Texas) and junior
Joshua Valdez (Kyle, Texas) would carry the workload on the mound through the remainder of the contest as Flores struck out two in the eighth before Valdez pitched a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts to secure the win for the Hogs.
The Javelinas added four in their final at bat as junior
Manny Loredo (McAllen, Texas) laced a two-run double to right center to score Zents and senior
Austin Ingraham (Fort Worth, Texas), while Servin dropped a two-run single down the right field line to bring in Loredo and junior
Dylan Hutcheson (Wichita Falls, Texas) for a comfortable six-run cushion heading into the bottom half of the inning.
Valdez's efforts in the ninth cemented the line score at 8-2.
TAMUK will open Lone Star play next week on the road with a visit to Stephenville, Texas, for a four-game slate against Tarleton State starting on March 23.
