KINGSVILLE, Texas – A pair of strong pitching performances propelled the Angelo State Rambelles to a doubleheader sweep of the Texas A&M-Kingsville softball team on Saturday by scores of 5-1 and 6-0 at Hubert Field in Kingsville, Texas.
GAME ONE
Both Breanna Smith and Brandy Marlett locked eyes in a pitcher's duel for the first three frames before a two-run blast by Karina Rocha put the first runs on the scoreboard. Angelo State added one more to their total later in the frame on a sacrifice fly by Mylonee Becerra.
The Javs broke through against Marlett (4-0) in the bottom of the fourth when Roxy Chapa singled, pinch-runner Sydney Andrews stole second and later scored on a double by Arabella Acosta-Cantu.
The Rams responded in the sixth, pushing across a pair to increase their lead to four when Taegan Kirk drilled her team's second two-run homer of the game off Smith (2-2). Marlett did the rest, retiring the side in order in the seventh for her fourth win.
GAME TWO
For the second straight day, Morgan Hill (7-1) had all her pitches working and silenced the Javelina bats in the nightcap. She allowed three hits and walked one in six-and-a-third innings. She also totaled six strikeouts while picking up her seventh win.
Hill didn't need much in the way of run support, but the Rambelles provided her with a lead when Brooke Mangold drove in two runs with a second inning double against Smith (2-3). That lead grew to four in the third thanks to an RBI single by Taegan Kirk and a fielder's choice that brought in Karina Rocha. ASU added single runs in the fifth and seventh to close out the scoring.
Two more games are up next for the Javelinas on Tuesday, when the Texas A&M International Dustdevils come to Kingsville for another doubleheader, which will begin at 4 p.m. at Hubert Field.
