Thompson posts second 20-point game in loss to No. 21 Rambelles

Junior finishes 7-for-13 from the field in TAMUK’s LSC loss to Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Junior Brynae Thompson (Houston, Texas) provided a spark late in the contest between the Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball program and No. 21 Angelo State on Thursday at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center, but couldn't stop the hosts as the Blue and Gold came away on the backend of a 75-43 decision in the Lone Star Conference matchup.

The Javelinas (2-5, 0-3 LSC) fell behind early to the Rambelles (5-0, 3-0 LSC) and failed to close the gap late in the loss.

ASU struck first in the early goings after building an 8-2 cushion at the 7:23 mark of the opening quarter. Junior Rachel Tapps (Cypress Ranch, Texas) hit the running jumper for the Javelinas at 6:58 to keep the visitors close behind before the Rambelles closed the frame on a 9-2 run for a 17-6 lead going into the second.

Angelo State built on the lead from there, eventually taking a 22-point cushion with under a minute to play in the stanza before the Javelinas faced a 35-10 deficit going into the break.

Thompson tallied her first bucket of the game at the 7:05 mark of the third quarter as the Rambelles kept the pressure on with a 42-12 lead at that time before the Houston native finished with 11 of the Javelinas' 13 points in the quarter.

ASU carried the 54-23 advantage at the beginning of the fourth and cruised from there while Thompson hit her remaining nine points throughout the fourth en route to the 75-43 final.

The Cy-Fair H.S. product ended her 20-point game on 7-for-13 shooting from the field, hitting five free throws in the process, to go with three rebounds and one steal. Tapps finished with six points alongside two rebounds, matched by newcomer Bridget Upton (George West, Texas) who's six points came on a 3-for-5 clip.

The Javelinas are off for the next 11 days and will resume action on Monday, December 17, with a road contest against Texas A&M International in Laredo, Texas, with tipoff set for 6 p.m. CT.
